Sometimes compilations don't do justice to bands and so it is with Free. All five albums in this set are must-haves in their own right, full of great cuts that never make it on to Greatest Hits. Incredible value.

Wonderful collection of albums from Free,a much underrated band from the late 60s to early 70s. The band featured the incomparable Paul Rodgers who continues to perform to this day. Highly recommended.

Fantastic and essential music

These '5 classic albums' collections are sometimes superb. This example being a case in point. Starting with their eponymous second album ('69) - which has one of the grooviest covers ever - and also including Fire & Water ('70), Highway ('70), At Last ('72), and Heartbreaker ('73), this set covers the glory years and the essentials. Not included are their debut, Tons of Sobs, or their Live album from '71.
I've always loved the few hit tunes I knew - Alright Now (despite its use in ads!*), Wishing Well, etc - but it turns out that the bulk if their catalogue is, by and large, really great. I was pleasantly surprised by how mellow they remain. I was expecting more upbeat bombastic power rock, to be honest. And I love that they're a less is more act. It's also quite surprising to realise that they're British, so steeped are they in bluesy, American sounds. The music is stripped down, soulful, and has a very positive vibe. And all involved are top drawer musicians. Lean, with buckets of feel, this is superb stuff. Highly recommended.
* And despite using it in my drum teaching for years now!

The Band plays on.........

Five great albums by the best British blues rock band ever. Big part of my life the last 40 odd years. Rodgers and Koss the greatest singer/guitarist partnership ever. Heartbreaker was the first album I bought in 1973 and still my favourite. At this price you can't go wrong. I saw Rodgers at the RAH recently doing all Free songs including Catch a train & Love you so. Great but you cannot beat the original band playing these.

A good next step in your Free education

If you want more than a best of, this is a great package at a very good price, let down only by the relatively weak Free at Last album. As other reviewers have said there is little information on the sleeves and there are no bonus tracks and no mention of remastering. However there are no complaints about the sound with a crisp bass, and keyboards coming through cleanly where I could not remember them, but that me my old ears.
I may get their first Tons of Sobs album later, but for now this package, two remastered collections and Free Live (in the bonus track version) keeps their spirit alive in this house. Shame there isn't more good live material available out there.

If you like Free then you've probably got some of these CD's

If you like Free then you've probably got some of these CD's. Being old I've got them on vinyl and decided to purchase the set. Very pleased and excellent value for money. A little surprised it did not include 'Tons of Sobs' but I've bought it separately and I'm happy.

A good collection at a good price.

The first album here – ‘Free’ – on initial listening seems rather downbeat and down tempo and not likely to get the listener interested enough to want to rush out and buy more of the band’s catalogue. While there are a couple of songs with more get-up-and-go, ‘Songs of Yesterday’ and ‘Trouble’, generally speaking this is a disappointing follow up to their debut ‘Tons of Sobs’.
The second album – ‘Fire and Water’ - starts out strongly with the title track and ends even more strongly with the full-length version of ‘All Right Now’.
The third record begins well with ‘The Highway Song’ followed by ‘The Stealer’. It also includes the well known ‘Be My Friend’ and the equally good ‘Ride My Pony’. A good all-round album.
The fourth here consists of a succession of well-constructed tunes, the best known being the extremely short ‘Little Bit of Love’. It also has a very good outro in ‘Goodbye’. Altogether a very listenable album.
The last in this set begins with the well-known ‘Wishing Well’, followed by the equally well known ‘Come Together in the Morning’.
As can be seen from the track times this collection has the albums as they were originally released on vinyl and are therefore quite short. The hit missing here is ‘My Brother Jake’ which was only issued as a single, so is only available on compilation albums.
With this set and ‘Tons of Sobs’ you have pretty much the whole ‘Free’ collection except ‘Free Live!’ which is a standout live album to match any. This collection is a good way to experience the band without spending a great deal of money.
Free: 35 ¾ mins. Fire and Water: 35 ½ mins. Highway: 35 ¾ mins. Free at Last: 36 ¼ mins Heartbreaker: 35 ¾ mins.
