Pros:
- Solidly constructed, with decent heft to it. Feels like a premium product.
- Changes modes easily between Switch and PC (after learning the settings - see below)
- Big face buttons and thumbsticks comfortable for larger hands
- Gyro controls work perfectly on Switch
- Raised d-pad great for 2D games.
- Pretty much all key bindings and axis sensitivities customizable through customization software.
Cons:
- Manual could be clearer about the importance of mode selection.
- Control software potentially suspect; requires overriding a Windows security warning to install.
Can't comment/haven't used:
- Macro and turbo features
- Can use AA batteries in a pinch.
- Lack of NFC
Conclusion:
Overall this is a great controller. It connects easily, is comfortable in the hand for long periods, and works great. Both Breath of the Wild on Switch and Sonic Mania on Steam were a pleasure to play. Personally I find the raised d-pad more comfortable for 2D retro games than the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller layout, and the gyro controls on Switch worked fine. It changes modes easily from wireless Switch controller to wired PC gamepad and back again. Battery seems fine; 8BitDo claims 20 hours and I don't think I've come close to using it up, so I haven't tested its AA battery option.
I do have some minor gripes. Changing modes is easy, but the controller must be in the right mode for the device you're using; at first I couldn't connect to the Switch because I'd turned on the controller in Windows mode. The control software has great features but running it requires overriding a Windows security warning; may be a deal-breaker for security-conscious users. It also lacks NFC support; not a problem for me but may be a nuisance to Amiibo owners.
All in all, this controller did everything I wanted as well as or in some cases better than the Nintendo Switch Pro Controler (d-pad position, Windows compatibility) at a slightly cheaper price. Recommended.
