This cassette player with USB interface was a good solution. Since the original recordings were not exactly hi-fi, i didn’t need (or expect) much. I used Audacity DAW software (its the recommended free app, really decent) and was able to record simply and easily. Now those moments of family history are digitized, online, and shared with extended family around the world.
More detailed review....
This appears to be the exact unit offered under multiple brands. I doubt there are any functional, practical or technical differences.
One pro for my application is that it does not thread the tape through any mechanism. The take-up motor does all of the drive and only an idler keeps pressure on the playback head without other tensioning mechanics. Basically drop the tape straight down, don’t even need to close the lid. The tapes i transferred were old, one of them had a damaged and wrinkled segment where a previous player must have tried to eat it. It sounded rumbly there of course, but did not jam.
The A/D for the USB converter is after the headphone amp, so you must set levels with the volume knob. For informal grandpa interviews where the dynamics are variable, you need to be careful to set the level so any loud parts do not clip/distort the digital recording. Playback a loud part of the recording to check if the levels are ok. If thats a dealbreaker for you or you are expecting CD quality audio, then any cassette player in this class/range is not for you anyway.
RF Noise gets induced into the playback head very easily using the included cable. My solution was to use a longer USB cable and placing the player as far as possible away from the computer or any other electronics. This minimized the interference enough for my needs.
So, for digital transfer of low-fi non-critical audio, i give this a strong recommend. For anything more critical like preservation of old store-bought music tapes, i would probably keep looking.
The player comes with a usb-mini cable, not micro. That cable is used for data transfer but can also be used to power the player. You just need a usb wall plug that doesn’t come with. We have many as they ‘breed’ like rabbits. It can make use of batteries too but these things have the habit of eating batteries like there’s no tomorrow.
It also comes with a cd/software to copy the music from analog to digital. I have not used and don’t plan to. Consequently I can’t provide anything more on that part. The earbuds that come with to be honest are the cheapest things I have ever seen in my life. They didn’t even come with those fuzzy caps that slide over. Just super cheap hard plastic. A pair of five buck earbuds here on amazon would be a thousand times better on all counts.
All said in the end what matters most is usability. The buttons are clearly labeled. Easy to push but for the one you must slide to open. IF you have dexterity issues griping with your fingers you may have difficulty opening it up. Once open just drop the cassette in and shut the door.
As for sound quality I tested two of her tapes and both worked okay. I could hear the timing so to speak speed up and slow down slightly, for me it was unnerving. But this isn’t for me as said for my mom. I had her listen and she was happy with it. That is all that matters for us. FYI I use the earphone out jack to plug a 3.5mm cable in with the other end going into her stereo’s audio in.
So all said considered cassette player are near extinct. I was just glad to be able to get one that didn’t cost an arm and a leg but worked. If your budget has no limit I’d recommend getting another better player but if not this will do the job.
