ORIGINAL REVIEW: Had an old analog Sony TV that I couldn't throw away because it still had such a great picture. Wanted to get those digital broadcasts on its screen. This unit did the job! Remote works fine. Shipping was fast, too. You will still need an antenna to receive the digital broadcasts. Some antennas are better than others, so you might want to look into that as far as getting more channels or better reception.
UPDATE: Less than one year later, this thing stopped working. And it's not like I used it every day, either....just once in a while, especially since I got a digital TV and I use that far more often than my old analog set. This unit is just a simple circuit board, and it still didn't even last one year of infrequent use. Doesn't anybody sell quality stuff anymore?
This can either be a lot of fun or a confounding product--depending on your experience and savvy with overseas inexpensive tech. To the "average user", there will be a ton of frustrations since there is really no documentation and you have to guess your way through the menus. If you are not geeky, do not buy.
That being said, this black box has a very powerful and selective tuner so I can not only pick up my locals flawlessly, I can pick up signals from Canada about 100 miles north. The EPG is the biggest frustration, retaining only one day of programming. There are rumors of software upgrades, but the company keeps a very low profile.
Understandable because the PVR (supplied) records to an external USB--which can then be plugged into a Windows 10 machine to copy, edit or share. This box eliminates the DRM from over the air broadcasts! That is certainly a big selling point.
One important tip--the box ships with a deceptive plastic skin covering the top vents. You MUST peel it off completely before use or the box will overheat. It would be very easy to skip this step.
This does everything your description says it will, though the instruction booklet could be a lot better. A search online brought a PDF of a similar model with a lot more detailed instruction booklet for those who need it. One thing some reviews mentioned was that it gets hot which I wonder was the cause for some premature failures. Upon unboxing the unit is wrapped in a very tight plastic skin that needs to be removed, since it actually would block the ventilation holes on top otherwise. I almost didn’t realize it was there since it is virtually invisible. Very happy with this unit and its features.
I really wanted to like the device, but I am disappointed. First, there is no way to adjust date or time, which are off even after you adjust for the correct time zone. Also there is no way to choose the time to record in advance, and there is no way to use the EPG to do the recording. So to record at 3am, for example, I have to get up in the middle of the night. Plus, each time I reattach the USB device, I have to reboot the box. I can't just insert the USB device and have it be recognized. Also, once you start recording on one channel, you can't switch and have it record on a different channel because it gets confused. It tells you it is recording on the new channel, when it isn't. Instead, it decides to record some random channel (in my case, in a foreign language!), so you have to turn it off, remove the USB device, reboot, then start all over again. I was hoping for a more elaborate manual that would address these items, but the manual is mostly for set up. Update 2/27/20: I ended up returning the first one I got because the software upgrade didn't resolve most problems above. However, it would get plenty of channels. Then I tried several other brands. None of them got any channels at all. So I looked at this one again. The interesting thing is that it wasn't immediately available. So I wondered if it was a newer version. Sure enough, it was. Many of the problems have been resolved, although the date is still 5 days behind and it sometimes switches back to Mexico as its default timezone which can throw off the timing of the recording. Also, it doesn't always remember that a USB is plugged into it. Still experimenting with the recording feature, so will update that section of the review later. Update 3/13/2020 - I have had a chance to experiment with the recording feature. In addition to the other problems listed previously, it does not record correctly when set ahead of time. I set it to record a channel this morning at 8am on one channel. Then, while leaving the TV on, I changed the channel and manually turned on the recording feature at 2:45 am, while using the sleep feature to turn it back off at 5am. It recorded the recording correctly starting at 2:45am, but did not come back on and record the show at 8am. Additionally, when I tried to set the recording manually, it again did not recognize the USB so I had to unplug it and then plug it back in again. As as previously mentioned, the date is off by 5 days with no way to adjust it. On the other hand, it does get 75+ channels unlike other similar devices. So if all you want is a device that will let you view OTA TV and you don't care about the recording feature, go for it. But if you also want to record TV, I still do not recommend it.
What a pleasant surprise. The only reasons I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 are: 1) It came without instructions. 2) The remote is fully functioned, but doesn't have the ability to learn to turn the TV monitor on and off, so I still need two remotes. The set of features for this tuner are quite amazing. I bought this for a friend who recently terminated her Direct TV subscription, and wants to watch the local over-the air TV stations. Even though the TV had 1080i Component inputs, the built-in tuner was so old it was the old analog type. Even without instructions, the connections are clearly labeled and I was able to install it with only a little experimentation. This unit is a better than expected solution. It found 62 local channels just using an indoor flat antenna, and produces a clear HD video image and clear sound. It's a little strange in how it identifies the stations for selection via the remote--channel 001 is the first one found (2-1 in my area), 002 is the second one found (2-2 in my area), and so on, but the list function displays their call letters and ID ("KTCA PBS" for 2-1). The program information and signal strength displays are useful and easy to understand.
This is the 4th of this type of Chinese OTA DVR I have tried, and probably the last. The old saying "you get what you pay for" applies here. Sadly, the choices for this type of device are cheap, like this one, or expensive, no middle ground. The two I have prior to this at least worked more or less for a year, although with frustrating features and occasional freezes. The third one I tried was DOA and sent back. It looks like this current attempt is not much better. It looked encouraging the first day of two, but now it freezes often, having to unplug and plug back in as it won't respond to remote or buttons on unit commands. The scheduled programming has also changed settings all by itself. Beyond the fact the channels on the unit display are listed numerically instead of by station call signs, which makes no sense what so ever, this would be a nice recorder for the money, but as is, it is basically junk. I wouldn't recommend it under any circumstances for any amount of sale price.
The time showing on front of box is off by 14 hours with no way to adjust it. The date on the recording schedule is 5days behind. If you want to set for recording of show, you have to subtract five days from actual date to set schedule. Will be returning to Amazon for refund
What I dislike about this product is that; the Tuner & Recorder Box was unwrapped. It looked like everything was thrown into the box with the USB cord, and with the Remote control, BUT with NO INSTRUCTIONS. So far I can't get the box to scan all the channels, because I have no instructions! I didn't know that I was buying a refurbished item, I though I was purchasing a new product!
