Ray Brown is without doubt one of the finest jazz bassist and together with his team, they created excellent jazz music. Track selection on this release is great. The sound is clear but improvements can be made on the remastering/recording. The stereo sound staging is too narrow. The instruments seem to clutter close to each other. Some of the tracks sound like "mono" but on closer listening, they are actually stereo recording. Would have preferred the recording to have better stereo imaging.
For a fine example of good sound quality, check out Piano Moods-The Definitive Oscar Peterson released by Universal Classics & Jazz 2005, listed in Amazon UK under ASIN B0009MA8YC.

This Album is a great introduction to Ray Brown, some really swinging recordings and a nice compilation of tunes. Get it!

I cannot say enough about the talent of Ray Brown. I come from a rock and Rolling Stones youth. Jazz was never on my radar until I experimented with Oscar Peterson who was often praised on CBC. As I listened I became aware of some magical bass background gymnastics that were not overpowering but were tasty talented licks on what I perceived as a cumbersome instrument. Then I learned about this guy Ray Brown and started buying anything I could find that included him. Besides Peterson I discovered many other big jazz names that had incorporated RB's talent. If you like music and appreciate talent in any form I encourage you to give this guy a listen even when he is not the main course but tastefully supporting the big stars he was associated with.
