In 1987, the whole floor at a cosy little club in California and 'Roy's Boys', a band of accompanying musicians, rose to show their appreciation of a great artist, and as one person who was interviewed put it, 'a very warm, generous and gentle man'. Can't believe it happened all those 30 years ago, and this 'enhanced' CD and DVD pack of the show is still as good as ever! Where else could you find one of Buddy Holly's original Crickets playing alongside the great James Burton (once guitar soloist on all Ricky Nelson's early hits and member of Elvis's latter day backing band), plus more modern wonders such as Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello (who wrote a song for Roy which was recorded here for the first time), and Canadian country star k.d. Lang (although she was 'demoted' to just doing the 'oohs' and 'doo waarhs' in a girlie chorus line) ? For me, some other such tribute shows that offer a whole collection of superstars in their line-up don't always come across, but this one certainly does. The word I think is 'respect'. I'll brag a little to say that I actually saw Holly perform with his Crickets when they came over to really establish rock 'n' roll here in the UK, and later Roy too when he was at his very peak, and that was nice to be 'reunited' again, but it's all too sad that after gaining new recognition as a member of the Travelling Wilburys, Roy wasn't to survive life very much longer.
Excellent stuff -- if you haven't got a copy already, just buy it. I can guarantee you won't be disappointed with this truly fitting memento!
Thank you Thank you Thank you. I have listened to this album for nearly 30 years and i knew there had to be more, Roy was a teriffic performer, musician, artist, song writer and person,he has and still does touch millions of people around the world with music from another time indeed world. What this take on this event captures is the essence of live performance and mastery of vocal presence that leaves the listener with goose bumps. What does come through is the guitar master class of the greatest guitarist ( in my mind) of our generation James Burton with alternative takes on these classics. Also worth a mention is the download tracks, make sure you do this! Now looking forward to the realease of Roy and Phil and his harmonica November.. absolute legend
Brilliant cd. A good mix of the old and the new songs (tho' they're not so new these days). It's obvious that Roy was really enjoying himself that night and who wouldn't with a top notch backing band and singers, all of them stars in their own right.
Brilliant DVD and cd. I was amazed at how much smoke there was around the musicians at some points you could hardly see Roy and his musicians who included all of Elvis' TCB. band, a great bonus. Only problem I wasn't able to download the bonus tracks so only 4 stars but that is because of the download problem.
A great album, with just a couple of gripes. First, why do some noisy stupid Americans have to whistle, whoop and scream DURING a song, rather than simply celebrate at the beginning or the end. I want to hear Roy O sing, including those meaningful pauses, without some idiots yelling from the floor and polluting the sound-track. Secondly, what possessed the producers to include what sounds like a crappy little Stylophone organ in the backing track for 'Dream You'? The original track from the Mystery Girl album is a much better arrangement.
