I am disappointed in this book. As the introduction and title suggests, this is purported to be a cookbook of humble recipes made by French people at home. The beginning of the book has a handful of these recipes in the Simple Cakes chapter, but the rest of the cookbook is full of more complicated, though I'm sure delicious, recipes that require multiple steps, special ingredients, tools and techniques. Many of the recipes are compiled from from the patisseries of famous pastry chefs like Pierre Herme. French macarons, eclairs, profiteroles, etc., are not what I would consider a simple homey dessert. In fact, macarons (of which there are several recipes in this book) are extremely fussy and difficult to make. There are also recipes that are not at all French - whoopie pies, granola bars, chocolate chip cookies...
I wish I had seen this book in person first, as I probably would have not purchased it.
Sorry to say, we're disappointed. We've tried several recipes and found all to be numbingly sweet. After reducing the amount of sugar substantially we found the texture or some other aspect not right. Pity.
