As others have noted, all the 20 page instruction booklet says, in many languages, is download the app and follow the instructions. OK. Did so. What a poor app. Kept crashing. Didn't warn up front that you have to wait for the sound bar to update its firmware before it can connect (leaving me to spend ages switching both the app and the bar off and on to try and reboot and get it working.
Just as I gave up it somehow connected. Now for set up. It wanted me to input my devices. Fine, that worked for the telly, though the app just hung after I had finished inputting. What about my Amazon TV. No way, it would not recognise that within the app at all. Ok so how about my NowTV box. Not even a category for that which I could input. I gave up. Looks like it's just going to support the tv then.
Still it has got alexa, that's something. Inputted my amazon account details. Let's see if it works. "Alexa, what time is it" "I don't think I know that one". So it seems the microphone array is nowhere near as good as amazon's own products at a fraction of the size and price.
So then I decided to play some music from my amazon music app via the bose app. It worked. The music played, but (and this is the worst of all) what poor quality sound. Not even as good as the tv sound in my opinion. Nor my pure radio.
Maybe its just a problem with the signal, I thought. So let's see what its like with the tv. Now how do I switch to tv mode? Believe it or not I could not find a button within the app to do that. I looked through all the settings and screens and there does not appear to be a "source" button in evidence anywhere. I kid you not.
I did get it to play tv sound by switching both devices off and back on again, but as before the sound was woeful. Even on 100 in the app the volume was limited and quality no better than the tv's own speakers. Did I really pay £800 for this?
Thank goodness for the distance selling regulations, that's all I can say. I hate returning stuff but these folks do not deserve my money.
Now I will clarify that my tv (an ageing Samsung PS51D550 plasma) does not have HDMI-ARC and so I have connected the tv to the soundbar via optical cable (with the sky Q box connected to the tv via HDMI and also the xbox to the tv via hdmi). Is this the issue? Can I not enjoy HD Sky channels and xbox games with 5.1 surround unless my tv supports HDMI ARC and thus can send a 5.1 signal to the soundbar? I must admit I haven't tested it fully yet by trying to watching something on Sky that I know is broadcast in full 5.1 as it got too late last night but, on the face of it, it appears I need to update my tv.
I've only had one evening playing around with it so I've got plenty of research left to do so I may provide an update in the future. In the meantime, just a few quick points to note:
It looks beautiful in the arctic white colour
Music sounds awesome through it
The sub adds deep, thunderous bass. I have the unit behind the sofa and you can physically feel it! Amazing!
Speech sounds so much clearer compared to my old £300 samsung home theater set up. Some programs you struggle to hear what is being said then when there's a bit of action or incidental music it blares out. Not so with the bose. It seems to smooth out all the sounds and levels out the volumes of different sounds and speeach really stands out.
The light-up remote control is a revelation. It goes to sleep when you put it down then lights up when you pick it up. And it's contextual. It only lights up the buttons that are relevant to what you are doing at that point. Any buttons that won't have any function don't light up. My old remote had those glow in the dark buttons for the main functions but were useless. Now I can actually see what I'm pressing in the dark!!
Also, while a clear sound, no point in buying this without the sub.
No volume indicator on the device which is inconvenient.
If I’ve had a loud film on, Alex will be insanely loud, it’s a shame you can’t set a max volume for her voice.
Set up took ages.
audio syncing issues...
My 6 year old soundbar, while lacking the clarity of this soundbar, beats it in every other category that I just mentioned and came with a sub and cost me £450 in 2013.
Update : firmware sorted working as it should should be 5 stars for sound but only 3 as waiting 3 weeks to resolve with no way of rolling back firmware only 3
