About the authors
Robin is the Coordinator of the Botanical Art and Illustration Certificate Program at The New York Botanical Garden. She is the former Executive Director of the American Society of Botanical Artists.
For fifteen years, Robin was the illustrator for Dr. Arthur Cronquist and her work appears in many of his books including An Integrated System of Classification of Flowering Plants. She also provided numerous drawings for several volumes of the Intermountain Flora series by Dr. Noel Holmgren et al. Over the years, Robin has worked successfully in graphite, pen and ink, and watercolor. She is a member of National Tropical Botanical Garden Florilegium Society in Kauai, Hawaii and the TriState Botanical Artists of the New York Botanical Garden.
Robin was honored with ASBA’s James White Service Award for Dedication to Botanical Art in 2016. The New Jersey State Council on the Arts awarded Robin with two fellowships, including the Distinguished Artist Fellowship in 1990. With funding from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, in cooperation with the Pinelands Preservation Alliance, Robin created a series of forty watercolors of NJ’s Pinelands flora, which toured the state’s major museums and arts venues. Robin also designed the NJ Pinelands license plate. Robin is a graduate of University of Delaware and received an M.A. from Pratt Institute.
Prior to serving as Executive Director of the American Society of Botanical Artists, Robin held several administrative positions, most notably Interim Executive Director of the NJ Center for Visual Arts (now the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey) in Summit, NJ and Director of the New Jersey State Teen Arts Program.
Carol Woodin is the Director of Exhibitions for the American Society of Botanical Artists, organizing exhibitions of contemporary work for a national and international audience. A botanical artist for over thirty years, she specializes in rare plants, mainly orchids. Wildflowers, garden flowers, and fruits and vegetables are all potential paintings, and she is always at work on something new. Her favorite place to be is out in the field making studies of plants as they grow naturally. Woodin’s work has been exhibited around the world, some recent venues are the Shirley Sherwood Gallery, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK, Museo della Grafica, Pisa, Italy, U.S. Botanic Garden, Jonathan Cooper Gallery in London, and Newhouse Galleries, New York. Her orchid paintings appear in the recent monograph Slipper Orchids of the Tropical Americas authored by Phillip Cribb and Christopher Purver, among other books and magazines. She is the recipient of the 1998 ASBA Diane Bouchier Artist Award, a Royal Horticultural Society Gold Medal, the Lankester Award for Orchid Art, and the 2016 Orchid Digest Medal of Honor.
