This is a really captivating autobiography. The story of Hickson and the Gracies was so interesting that it was almost a fantasy. Reading this book made gave me the nostalgic feeling 90’s and when times were more innocent. The writing was so vivid, you could see the moments in your head (and in the pictures which were also very cool). I’m the type of person who when I’m interested in something, I like to know the roots. As a new student, I find bjj in itself to be interesting so, I found this book to be extremely interesting. My teacher learned from someone who learned from Royler so I had to read this and I’m glad I did. The way the Gracie family lives and the way the Gracie children were raised is extremely fascinated and at times in the book, I couldn’t help but be jealous of how Rickson grew up. Aside from BJJ, he’s lived a really interesting, unique life that was interesting to read about.

The one thing that was completely absent that I’m curious to know the history of is, when and how it was officially adopted by the military. Another thing that Rickson talked some about but I would have liked to read more in depth about was, the history of Judo. It would have been nice to see some tech drawings too but it’s an autobiography so, that’s not to be expected. Overall, awesome book and I couldn’t put it down. 10/10 would recommend to anyone interested in bjj, warrior mind frame, or looking for a great read about a bjj legend who’s lived a very interesting life.

I always loved martial books and so I eagerly anticipated this one. However, I wasn't that impressed with it. Although it was a good story that revealed a good deal that was previously unknown to me (like the story of when Helio Gracie was shot) the book wasn't that well written and it was pretty short... Overall, it was a good light read that I would recommend buying once it comes out in paperback and is cheaper.

Not a bad autobiography, but nothing earth shattering that Rickson fans didn't already know. There are some interesting anecdotes told from Rickson's childhood and life in Brazil, but felt a bit flat and may not keep non-BJJ fans tuned in. Still, for Rickson or BJJ fans, this is worth a look. It's a quick read.
