If you need something to just store a lot of data and share it in the home network, then this is for you. The NAS is pretty fast -- i'm downloading in my GbE network at around 700mbps which is acceptable in my opinion. The device is SMBv2 which is perfect for windows 10. (note older nas's that are on clearance is typically sMBv1 which isnt supported by windows anymore , without painful changes) . It also supports DLNA therefore most smart devices pickup the nas quickly and youre able to share anything without much tinkering.
Though it supports ftp -- i dont care for that in the home nas. It also supports access to your drive via web (provided you setup the ddns). I've had some trouble setting this up -- i ended up giving up because ultimately i dont really care to do this. My suspicion is because 'im double nat'd and i cant gain access to my main carrier modem admin so i'm unable to dmz my main internal router. Nice to know its possible but i have not successfully gotten it working (its likely my problem).
the USB port on the back can share another drive OR a printer. Nice options.
I really like this unit. Has tons of features and is virtually silent (even during file access). Good job Buffalo !
I don't think this device is for everyone. It helps a lot to know what you do when setting up (and you also miss a lot of advanced features). A usb hard drive is much simpler to use for people who don't want to learn how network drives operate.
As for performances, you get decent speeds as long as your networks is not slowing you down. If you are still using 100mbps network.... think of upgrading to gigabit or better. Limit of 100mbps router port using Smb protocol will limit ypur speeds to 4Mb/s or worse :-(
All in all, it is the best unit I could hope for that fits my needs. It deserves a complete review, but space here too limited to do that.
Hope my review helps. Happy year 2021 !
The need is really just to have a place to centralize my files on my home network.
Speed is a good point, but wasn't the main goal. It does a good job, certainly better than my DNS-323!
This NAS does the trick and is even easier to setup than my old box.
It's probably not one of the best when talking about network speed, but it does the job just fine for my needs.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it!
