Product description

May 8, 2011, marks the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson, who, according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads of Highway 61 and Highway 49 in a midnight bargain that has haunted the music world for three-quarters of a century. The deal brought forth Johnson s incandescent guitar technique and a run of 10-inch 78 rpm singles for the Vocalion, Oriole, Conqueror and Perfect labels recorded in San Antonio in 1936 and Dallas in 1937. Those songs have become a cornerstone of Columbia Records identity, and will be celebrated on two CENTENNIAL releases from Columbia/Legacy, a division of SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.

THE CENTENNIAL COLLECTION double-disc set shares the same genealogy as 1990 s Robert Johnson - The Complete Recordings, but that package has now been updated for a new generation. The set includes a new essay by Ted Gioia alongside a new biography of Robert Johnson written by Stephen C. LaVere (completely different from his essay in the 1990 version). Also included are new illustrations, photo images, and a family tree of music originating from Robert Johnson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 April 2017
Thanks to Record Store Day 2017, fans of Johnson were treated to a stunning three LP collection. Sadly, the collection seems to have been in low supply and has not generated much buzz which is a crying shame. As I fan I was lucky that I managed to acquire a copy in store and not through some shoddy eBay or marketplace vulture.

The Centennial Collection is an impressive collection of Robert Johnson's work. It is the full collection of singles and outtakes that was recorded by the blues artist. Those who already own the CD know that the music by comparison to previous releases are quite impressive and easily the best. The music sounds crystal clear with a lot of pops and scratched being removed. The clean sound should make this collection a must own on CD, never mind on vinyl.

When I opened the collection I saw a LP sleeve that has clearly had a lot of thought put into it. There is a lot of information to digest from release info to a nice lengthy essay printed on the inner sleeve. The records themselves sound fantastic, a little more natural than the CD's and have some nice retro looking circular labels. Personally speaking, I would have preferred a glossy sleeve but it still looks great and is impressive to look at.

My conclusion is that I can't imagine any Robert Johnson who would not want this album in their collection. Not only does it look fantastic but it sounds absolutely stunning too. This is a great way to hear this man's music the way it is meant to be played and I couldn't recommend it more.
