That's a big statement, I know, but David Goggins has such a unique, refreshing, and honest way of looking at things that unless you're intellectually and emotionally comatose (or would like to be), you can't help but grow as you read. After decades of conscious self-discovery I thought I knew myself well. Goggins showed me how I only knew the areas I wanted to know, and how the unexamined areas had been mud wrestling me behind the scenes for years. I'm going to come right out and say the one thing I never expected to say in a review: If in your life you're only going to read one book that will mess you up and set you right, you can't get better than this one.

This is without a doubt the most powerful, moving and inspiring book I've ever read, and I do read a lot. Reading Can't Hurt Me makes you take inventory of your life and gives you the spark to seek out challenges and be more than you thought you ever could be. To say the story of David Googins is remarkable is the understatement of a lifetime. This man has achieved so much and pushed his body and mind far beyond what most would believe to be humanly possible. But he wasn't always like this. He grew up poor, abused physically and mentally, suffered a learning disability, became obese. And then he saw a documentary on the Navy Seals, which changed everything for him. Through a combination of self-doubt, dissatisfaction, and a burning desire to see who he could be and what he could amount to, so Goggins began possibly the most remarkable human transformation ever documented. By developing a hardcore work ethic, and redirecting my internal dialogue, I now feel like anything is possible if I get after it.

A year ago, I survived a heart attack, age 30 - doctors told me I couldn't be able to do anything too physical in the future, and that I need to take it easy for the rest of my life. I couldn't handle this, as I refused to accept the advice of clinicians locally here, who relied heavily on out-dated research and mostly knew how to help a much older group of people. Feeling very alone, I started researching cardiologists and athletes with a heart condition, and this guy David Goggins shows up.
Ever since then I've been following and consuming every piece of material and interview he has made - his advice and his philosophies to life was instrumental in helping me complete the very challenging Kokoda track in Papua New guinea a year after my heart attack - I climbed 6 mountains in 7 days in extreme tropical mud and heart, listening to David's voice in the back of my head.
The important thing about Goggins is he's a normal guy who's been through some tough challenges in life, and has come out on top. There is no end to the challenges though, and he's pretty much going to tell you what you already know - this is all hard work. This book teaches you, through his experiences, how to embrace the intensity, how to face your demons, and how to commit to your goals, and the dangers of "living happily ever after"
Get on to it. Oh and if you're someone who complains about profanity and bad language, then don't f***ing read this book. Stay hard.

The raw truth of a harsh reality that isn’t sugar coated is refreshing. I found similarities in childhood challenges that were of the same ilk but in different times and varied circumstances.
If you have read the book, buy the audio and listen to it, as I found the way it was recorded with extra dialogue by David was an incredible layer that cemented the lessons he is sharing.
Can’t hurt me demonstrates by example that the worst people can try to do to you is not possible without your participation and consent. It highlights how being comfortable stunts our growth and denies our dreams.
It’s time to get uncomfortable, to hold ourselves to account and to prove to ourselves that we can dig deep to do far more than we conceived possible. All told by a man who lives this mantra and proves it, every single day.
I truly loved this book and enjoyed the audio even better.

My goodness, why do people criticize the swear words!? I started reading expecting to be inundated with swearing and honestly, it's very mild and completely appropriate...If I had gone through all he had I also should be given free rein on the swearing.
What a great book...I can't recommend it enough. I am so happy I bought it. I struggle with chronic PTSD ...meaning I have to endure similar events on a regular basis as well as regular triggers...this is the first anything to give me some hope to facing it all and developing resilience to it. I may actually have a great life after all...I may even become a valuable and inspiring member of society... How wonderful. Thankyou David...Go Goggins!
FYI - I'm a female in her late 40's... if this gives more context.

David Goggins showcases the tragic story of a young boy, disadvantaged by domestic violence, racism, learning difficulties, fear of water, and a resulting threat to physical and mental health, to one of the most accomplished persons in the Navy SEALs, ultra racing, and now authors.
This book is written 100% from the heart and, if you have watched some of Dave's interview, you will find that reading this book is like him talking to you personally. It doesn't hold back on the graphic past of his life, however nasty, and perfectly reflects the message it portrays so effectively: accept the truth, only then you may be able to change.
Following Dave's principles turns you into a healthy masochist, seeking out everything that keeps you up and haunts you at night, running towards the dragon, not away from it. And I can personally attest to the fact that, when you run towards all the things that scare you the most, and you beat/settle them, there's an amazing feeling of 'that was it, what's next?', as well as an acceptance of adverse events through a 'calloused mind'.
My favourite aspect of the book is the 'WHAT IF?', and perfectly summarises Dave's story and message. What if you, reading this right now, could be somebody that nobody, including yourself, thought you could be, how would that feel? Use that to drive you forward and even if your attempts fail, say 'roger that' and try until you succeed.
Dave shows that in order to overcome and master yourself you must become quiet and 'go into your own mind' which is a challenge in today's society where social media and low quality entertainment steals everyone's attention.

Agree 99%, Disagree 1%
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 January 2019Verified Purchase
Very well written, powerful story with a unique character and attitude, which you can feel very strongly as you read about David's journey. I agree 99% with David, especially his view that "The ticket to victory often comes down to bringing your very best when you feel your worst" (Page 59). I am truly amazed and fascinated with David’s journey and he is no doubt an inspirational individual that everyone can learn from a great deal.
However, having said that there is one boxing example in the book, I strongly disagree with on (Page 211-212): “Imagine you’re a boxer, and on your first day in the ring you take one on your chin. It’s gonna hurt like f*****g hell, but at year ten of being a boxer, you won’t be stopped by one punch. You’ll be able to absorb twelve rounds of getting beat the f**k down and come back the very next day and fight again. It’s not that the punch has lost power. Your opponents will be even stronger. The change has happened within your brain. You’ve calloused your mind. Over a period of time, your tolerance for mental and physical suffering will have expanded because your software will have learned that you can take a hell of a lot more than one punch."
The problem with this particular example is that there have already been multiple rigorous scientific brain scan studies done investigating the long-term accumulative brain damage from constant concussions sustained over a period of time, especially in boxing. Therefore, continuous punches to the head after 10 years could very likely lead to or significantly increase the risk of serious irreversible consequences such as confusion, headaches, memory loss, social instability, impulsive behavior, dementia, movement disorders, speech impediments, tremors, cognitive disorders and depression. David talks a great deal about his injuries (broken skin & bones, heart surgery) and his incredible ability to be able to persevere with his enormous will power. However, there is a huge difference between braking your skin & bones, which eventually will heal compared to sustaining long-term brain damage, which is simply irreversible! and no amount of will power can regenerate it back to the way it was. Just read about these boxing legends who developed debilitating brain diseases as a direct result of the constant concussions sustained over their boxing career:
1. Sugar Ray Robinson (Developed Alzheimer’s disease)
2. Muhammad Ali (Developed Parkinson’s disease)
3. Jerry Quarry (Developed brain atrophy & dementia)
4. Freddie Roach (Developed Parkinson’s disease)
5. Michael Watson (Sustained serious brain injury, confined to a wheelchair)
6. Meldrick Taylor (Developed dementia)
7. Thomas Hearns (Developed dementia)
8. Riddick Bowe (Sustained brain damage)
9. The list goes on….
My recommendation would be to ignore the ignorant boxing example, because the rest of the book is fantastic and truly inspiring.
