Barking Mad & Dubious Xmas AnthologyReviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 December 2020
In terms of quantity, this is excellent value. It's a collection that has almost every Xmas story/poem that you can imagine (and is probably out of copyright). Where else would H.P. Lovecraft rub shoulders with Shakespeare and Dostoevsky? Yup, all Dickens' Xmas stuff is here and O. Henry, Saki, A.A. Milne, Conan Doyle (The Blue Carbunclen; quelle surprise) and Beatrix Potter. And the lyrics for most carols. However, a great deal of the material is dreadful or just plain weird: there's a Stephen Leacock story involving a sad Santa who's been machine-gun Ed (!) and a Xmas mystery story about 3 wise men that beggars belief. And, worst of all, a poem called Chrismus on de Plantation, written in - well, let's just say I'm astounded the editors included this piece. So, excellent value, but with a taint of racism.
Bumper read - this has got to be the best value ever!Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 January 2019
There's a vast amount of reading here; it would take you quite a few Christmases to get through the quantity of classic, well-known and not so well-known literature about Christmas here. It's astonishing value for just 49p. I'm looking forward to the challenge! Just one quibble. 'Twelfth Night' has got no connection with Christmas whatsoever, so I wouldn't have included this one.
Impossible to readReviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 October 2019
This is a good selection of items at a really cheap price. The only problem is that every time I try to read anything it crashes and goes back to the same place. (I've tried it on two Kindles and it's the same on both of them!)
Quantity rather than qualityReviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 January 2020
Most of the stories are pretty naff. Sorry.
