In November 2020 they released new firmware and Cloud OS5 for the device. This removed a lot of the core functionality of the device. They advertised it as a mini cloud server, with web services, web dav, sql database functionality, external cloud access, and a host of other apps. They removed most of the apps, removed all external network access, added in authentication through their own servers so all your data and usage is logged by them remotely, and removed the option to run a lot of your own services using docker. They also severely limited it's usage as a network drive by removing most of the authentication options and forcing all auth to go through their servers, so things like smart cameras or other network devices you may own cannot store the footage or data to the device as they naturally don't have support for WD's custom redirect and authentication servers.
They turned a functional and useful device into a local hard drive only usable exactly the way they want you to use it, as a network drive for a PC. Most other uses are removed, and all the reasons I purchased it are no longer available to me.
There are hundreds of forum posts on their community portal begging them to reintroduce features, asking why things were moved or changed or altered in ways that removed functionality, and now after weeks of posting most of them are still unanswered or given vague "this is no longer supported in OS5" replies. The worst ones being "that should still work the old way" and when a user follows up stating it does not as the new changes totally alter it, there is radio silence.
If you are looking at the advertised specifications sheet on their site, or the advertised app support, or the cloud features they show off, know that most of that is outdated information and those options are no longer available. Steer clear of this now defunct product line.

It was VERY easy to install and set-up - although the browser interface on my PC can be very slow - and inserting and removing hard drives is very quick and simple (so simple that I kept thinking something must have gone wrong, only to find it working perfectly!). It's the perfect size and shape for a smallish desk. It would be fantastic if not for ...
There's one single, large fan at the back. Any issue with that fan, however temporary, effectively takes out the whole server. And even when it isn't failing, it's often making so much noise trying not to over-heat, that I have to switch it off. It's off most of the time now, which isn't what I needed.
It's a shame because otherwise it would be AMAZING value for money. Buy one with two fans at the rear - I intend to!

Problem was WD were out of stock and couldn't supply the same unit so after a few e-mails back and forth, they agreed to supply a new PR4100 (apparently an upgrade on the EX4100). This has arraived and so far has been fine.
So in summary, it's a good unit when it works, but I had problems with mine and looking online, this wasn't a one-off. That said, WD support eventually offered a solution - just hope it continues to work properly!

It has run perfectly since I installed it about 2 months ago,, with one firmware update being performed flawlessly.

I had user account access issues for which I contacted support. After a few emails which didn't resolve the problem it was escalated and was told that the EX4100 firmware has been updated and so access isn't the same as the previous firmware in my DL4100 changing access to the unit. I am disappointed that user access to the unit is now via the internet only and not possible via the LAN like the old unit. I don't use Cloud access which restricts the use of the unit via the LAN only. Access to files and folders across the LAN is possible by mapping drives to shares but not access to the apps. I already had a two drive QNAP NAS which is easier to access. Because of restricted access to the EX4100 without the internet I have bought a Synology NAS which is far superior and like QNAP is fully accessible on the LAN.
