I preordered this book prior to its release, when it had no reviews for obvious reasons. But I own several ATK books and I love them all.

This one in particular, is very helpful, as it breaks down the “anatomy” of a salad in a simple way and it really teaches you to invent a salad from scratch, beyond the recipes on the book; by adding a foundation (ie. greens), a structure (meats, fruits), a detail (nuts, croutons) , and a facade (deessing). The book has a good balance of gorgeous images and structured text. Also, it is cleverly organized, and it has guides on flavors and texture combinations that work well. Furthermore, it goes into how to prepare crunchy add-ons like crispy chickpeas, how to make salad dressings, how to cut/prepare your veggies and meats -it even shows how to care for your wooden salad bowl.

I bought this book after hours of searching for a good salad book with enough variety and easy to follow for beginners. My husband has difficulties cooking, he was raised in a traditional family where he never had to enter the kitchen other than for eating. I was looking for a recipe book to incorporate more veggies in our diet, but that he could follow while also learning some cooking tricks. This one exceeded my expectations, and I had high expectations! We have only had this for a few days, and my husband has already made several delicious and colorful salads without any help.

As far as I know, we found the best salad recipe book! Get this book if you want to start eating healthier, with variety, and learn a few tricks on the way. If you rather continue eating just lettuce and tomatoes then pass on this one.

If you're looking to someone to give you basic, everyday bordom in salad form this book probably isnt for you. It is a book, like any other ATK books, is full of colorful, complex, well-refined recipes.

It might be daunting at first to dive in, but you wont be disappointed once you have taken the journey. ATK takes the guess work out by doing what their namesake is, testing. Every recipe contains tidbits of knowledge about how they arrived where they did. How their flavors interact, or at least notes that chronicle what did and didn't work for them.

To be honest though, you will find a few simple recipes, their peach Caprese salad only calls for seven ingredients, two of those are salt and pepper.

The only reason I gave this four stars is a few pages had print issues, one of which obscures a measurement on a recipe.
