I have recently been revisiting the music of my youth. It was no surprise to me that I started listening to my collection of Duran Duran cds. Again, it was no surprise to me how great their music sounds today. That is a testament to their longevity.
When they exploded onto the music scene in the late 70's early 80's, they were described as "New Romantic ". That was the description that the music journalists of the time were comfortable with. If that was an apt description, then the boys were in good company with the likes of Spandau Ballet, Visage, OMD, Ultravox and many others. I very rarely mention other bands or soloists when I write a review, but in this case I am making an exception. It is true that many of the bands and soloists of that era had great success.
You may well ask "what makes Duran Duran different "? There are many factors that contribute to Duran's success both musically and commercially. Don't panic, I'm not going to mention all of them. It helps if you have a good looking band that is easy on the eye. To all the screaming girls of the time, they definitely had that. Yes it is true that there were others that had that ability. Many of my gay friends at that time could also attest to this. So you have the girls and the gay folk swooning over the lads. Then you come to the rest of us. Duran Duran have an appeal to all music lovers. As a personal observation, I believe that this broad appeal contributed to their longevity.
I am an oldish geezer now, but Duran Duran sounds as fresh today as they did back in the mists of time. When you see the track listing here you know there is more to come. When singles and radio plays mattered, a band or soloist had to have a hit single. If this did not happen, then sadly many artists were dropped by the money suits! For an album, like this one, Duran Duran produced not one,but two mega hits. I would go one step further and say that at least two other tracks would have been massive hits.
As for the style of the music on this album. It has a greater depth of style. What Duran has created here is synth pop, rock, ballad,a use of classical instruments and yes new romantic. Most importantly, this album is their stepping stone for their own unique sound.

A preview of what Duran Duran would go onto achieve.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 June 2021
Duran Duran - "Duran Duran"Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 June 2019
This is the band's first album. It was released in 1981. I honestly think it's far from the best of the band though several fans consider it. Highlights include "Girls On Film," "Planet Earth," and "Anyone Out There." There is an honorable mention for "Tel Aviv" which is instrumental and interesting. As the first album, it can be relieved, but it's nothing exciting. "Careless Memories" is a track that was successful, but this original version is not the best (on the album "Arena", it is better). OK! Note 6.0.

Great debut album... but overlooked as such.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 October 2018
Rio will always be my favourite Duran Duran album, but this comes a close second. Girls On Film kicks things off brilliantly with one of the best intros ever and the rest of the album doesn’t put a foot wrong once. The sound of my youth: all killer, no filler.

So 80's!Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 May 2021
Purchased to update from the old vinyl copy I had. There is a bit of filler, but mostly really good songs that certainly don't sound 40+ years old!
