Product description
Review
Readers should rejoice, because we now have a lady Jack Sparrow on our hands! Daughter of the Pirate King kidnapped my interest from the first chapter and never let it go! It's a superior debut with a deeply entangled romance, a fearsome heroine not to be trifled with, a clever hero that you seriously want to trifle with, and a plot twist that makes a rollercoaster seem stable. With a cunning plot, robust writing, and complicated characters, any reader will enjoy being manipulated in Levenseller's capable hands. Definitely for fans of Pirates of the Caribbean, fierce heroines, slow-burning romances, and adventures that can turn sour in the space of a gasp. Not for fans of complacent heroines, soothing plots, or those who don't speak sarcasm. --Anna Banks, New York Times-bestselling author of Of Triton
Levenseller makes an impressive debut with this funny, fast-paced, and romance-dashed nautical fantasy, set in an alternate world of pirates, sirens, and myriad islands....This one's not to be missed. --Publishers Weekly, starred review Levenseller has created a formidable female character who can take care of herself as she makes some hard decisions. Hand to skilled readers seeking true adventure with swashbuckling, sword fighting, and a great problem-solving heroine. --School Library Journal Tricia Levenseller's vivacious debut novel, the first in a duology, boasts stormy seas, sexy pirates, swordplay and a heroine who conquers all three with aplomb.... A rip-roaring high seas escapade with a tinge of fantasy, Daughter of the Pirate King will engage and enthrall its teen audience. -- Shelf AwarenessReview

I really enjoyed this book. I am VERY late to reading it but I was looking for something easy to listen to on Audible.
I really don’t have anything to say to fault it. It was written as a typical YA fantasy but with a twist of pirates. At the time I am sure it would have been something different for the genre.
Daughter of the Pirate King was just a straight up fun read! I'm not going to blab on here and instead just dive into breaking down what I liked/didn't like.
Soooo, the plot. As a fun, fast-paced read with sword fights and treasure hunts and general pirate stuff - yes, this book features it all, but... I have to agree with other readers about this book being a little repetitive in regard to plot points. For the first 220 pages or so, the stuff that happens does become more and more familiar, though, after the 220 page mark, it does pick up and concludes really well. I didn't mind that the plot was repetitive because the book felt like it was supposed to be fun and just an enjoyable reading experience, especially with how short it is, so yeah, just a lot of fun (I think that is going to be the key word in this review).
What really carries this book is the fantastic characters and witty dialogue that never stops. Alosa is such a great character and I loved reading her voice and experiences. Riden, Daxton and all the other pirates came in well, and whilst there wasn't a big focus on some of the other pirates, I still felt like I got a really good snapshot of everyone.
The mythology was woven in well and interesting. The author has a very pleasing writing style - very easy to read and follow.
All in all, if you're a reader looking for a fun, quick pirate read, then Daughter of the Pirate King is definitely for you. I won't deny that I'll be reading on more for the characters than the mystery of the plot and I can't wait for book 2 and more pirate action!

The pace of the story line is very fast, everything mentioned in the blurb starts off in the first chapter, which I really enjoyed. There was no waffling in the book, it was very focused on the plot and plan. The setting was described very nicely and a map of the ship is provided which really helped with imagery. I knew what the author was describing and that allowed me to enjoy the book so much more!
The writing is very basic and understandable, which I loved because I wasn't fumbling around trying to figure out how to pronounce a word or what a word meant, like some other books have made me do *cough, cough Eragon*
The main characters are likeable. Alosa is admirable, her talent, skills and wit is everything throughout this novel. I loved her persona. Riden is equally fantastic- very skilled, intelligent and funny. They complemented each other from the very beginning. Their chemistry was on fire!!! They are very compatible. The story line followed through equally with their relationship, which was very refreshing to read. Usually, there is too much focus on the relationship and little on the plot or vice versa, but this book balanced both.
Initially I thought this was a stand alone novel, but I was very excited to discover it's a duology. I have ordered the next book and I'm really excited to read it!!
The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because there are a few occasions, I think three, where it gets very sexual and explicit. I DID NOT like that at all- I think it ruined the plot. I was not prepared for it at all, especially because I was under the impression that this novel is for a younger audience. I like a little PG chemistry here and there, but not sexual intimacy in a young adult novel, especially considering the characters are so young and they barely knew each other. The way it was portrayed was horrid as well, it was completely used as manipulation and in desperateness, which will give younger readers the wrong impression and ideas about intimacy.
Apart from that criticism, I enjoyed the rest.

This is the first book I’ve ever read about pirates, and now I want more.
I love that the main character is a fierce, stubborn, arrogant, and skilled woman. Alosa is so funny, I was laughing out loud a lot throughout this book. Her attitude made this story all the more enjoyable.
I loved Riden right from the very start. I really enjoyed the banter, among other things. *inserts winking emoji*
I really liked the storyline, and how it was written.
Some of the other characters really stood out to me too, like Enwen and Kearan.
I’m really happy with how it all played out and I’m so excited to read on. I can’t wait to see what happens next. I need book 2 now!
Below is just one of my favourite extracts, trust me, I have loads!
‘His philosophy is that if you have the power to do something, then you should do it.’
I'd also like to thank the lovely Danielle for talking me into reading this, it truly is a really enjoyable read that I'll happily reread a few times over.

Alosa is easily one of my favourite female leads, she’s fierce, cunning, clever - I could go on for days. Her witty thoughts kept the chapters fun and the story flowing, I just couldn’t help but fly through the pages.
I loved her rapport with Riden, as well as her interactions with the rest of the crew. She didn’t cower when they tried to threaten or intimidate her, she stood her ground and I loved that about her.
The storyline was imaginative and fun, and the only downside was that it ended a little abruptly, almost like the book had been split in half into a duology rather than written as two separate books, so I’ll be off buying the next one ASAP!
I’m intrigued to learn more of Alosa’s backstory and see her relationship with her father as well as learn more about her mother’s heritage. And of course I’m excited to see her female crew in action!
It’ll be a nice turn around to have her in charge and Riden aboard her ship instead!
Hugely recommended for pirate fans!

The only thing I didn’t like about this book was; I felt like a lot of the big reveals were done very quickly without a lot on exploration into what it meant, it was like it was chucked at you and you had to accept it. I don’t know if it was me being a little tired while reading it, but it’s what I felt. While it was predictable at times, I did love all the various twists and turns included that were used to set up the sequel coming in 2018. Overall, the adventure, witty dialogue, and budding romance between Riden and Alosa are enough to make this a 5 star read on it's own
