I was a bit disappointed with this nail varnish, I was expecting great things from the gel finish and 12 days of wear without chipping. I then found that the polish will only last that long with 2 coats and a special Essie top coat - meh, all nail polishes will last that long if you do that, so this one is really nothing special. I usually use brands that will last at least 4-5 days with a single coat of polish (no top coat), so I was not happy when this one coat of Essie that I applied started seriously chipping the very next day. Not worth my time to be honest.
On the plus side the brush was easy to use and the nail polish applied well with only some slight streaking (already not up to the standard of my usual brands, but still acceptable). Dried quickly.
The colour I got (Make the Cut) was a weird pearly white with a tinge of dusky pink. It stood out against my tanned skin, and looks suitable for a bride. If you were willing to put in the effort with the three coats then it would look nice for a wedding.
I have been using home gel nails and lamp for about 3 years now- but sometimes I can't always find the spare hour needed to use this system and was keen to see how normal good brand nail polishes had upped their game in the last few years. I already had one Essie gel colour and this was a new one to my collection. So firstly it goes on extremely well, very evenly, and the brush has been well designed to cover the nail very easily, I do mine in just two strokes, and sometimes one. The dry time between each coat is very quick, and I normally paint the second layer within about 3 minutes. After 2 coats I then apply their recommended top coat (although) this is not included in the price and you have to buy is separately- but it is recommended as a two step process, and their instructions advise topping up the top coat every couple of days. So the final look of the nail is glossy, and quite smooth, and actually looks very much like a gel finish- not quite the same, but certainly not far off, and much better than a standard nail varnish. So on to whether the nail varnish held up- their website lays claim to chip free colour for up to 10 days. I have to say that this was not the case for me- a couple of days before a chip, but if I did have a chip it was very easy to just put an extra layer on that nail and it didn't seem to look odd. I have given four stars, as it as certainly did not last anything as long as they suggest. I found the colour very odd to describe, it is pearlescent, a little bit grey- a kind of iridescent moonshine- very beautiful - but not for me on my skin tone- although I would happily buy product this in colours that are a bit brighter. I would recommend this product for easy application, and gel effect for a few days- not quite gel, but as it only takes a few minutes- its no big deal to reapply.
Make the cut - This is like a very very mild pearl silver/ grey. One coat provides really good coverage although you will need two coats to get the nicest colour. The brush is curved at the end so goes into your cuticle really nicely. The pearl part is very subtle and looks really good. This colour is really nice!
Spool me over - This is a pale peach colour which is very flattering on darker skin. Usually peach tones are too orange but this is lovely.
Take me to Thread - This is a bit like OPI Over the Taupe.
Stitch by Stitch - a lovely dusky pink shade. good coverage in one coat.
Surrounded by Studs - My favourite of all I have tried. This is a deep midnight blue. great cover and colour hue!
Top coat - very nice and easy to apply. Dries reasonably quickly and helps the colour stay put.
Do I believe they will last 12 days - this would depend on whether you ever used your hands for anything! Everyone's nails are different and the longest wear I have ever got out of a polish before chipping is 3/4 days and that is being really careful with everything!
A light summer colour a cross between silver grey and pale grey but without any hint of glimmer or shimmer. Pretty and easy to apply, two coats needed though for a better look I found. Looking at my toes they seem a nice pale grey and a modern look that will suit most skin tones and colour of clothing, looks nice with open toed shoes too. Did not have the same make top coat for using with it but used another make I usually use and it did the same job as most other top coats do. The brush makes it easy to apply and the bottle a nice shape one for ease of holding whilst applying. This for me is a colour I could use most of this summer I think when not wanting brights or vivid coloured toes. This one "Make the Cut" lasted a good ten days on toes and really a colour to go with anything type too. Think the thing is with this range the darker the coloured varnish the less number of coats required to get a nice Non streaked effect. This one did need two proper coats but another more fluorescent pink one needed three coats and then after a week it began to look streaky. With most of the Essie Gel nail polishes being lumped together you do have to look at the shades to see if right one as picture can be mistaken for another shade too.
essie Gel Couture Nail Top Coat
to give this nail varnish it's full effect. Without the top coat you get a dull finish and the varnish chips within hours.)
Full marks for the lovely bottle design. The brush is on the wider side but still easy to control. You do need two coats, one on it's own looks patchy & streaky. Drying time was about 4 minutes under an air dryer.
The instructions say no base coat is needed. I tried one hand with a base coat, one without. It made no difference to the colour, but the varnish was easier & cleaner to remove on the nails with base coat.
Make the Cut is one of the heavy, flat neutrals that seem to be in vogue at the moment (spring 2017). On the nails it's a touch more brown, and less white, than in the picture, but quite iridescent. Arguably the iridescence detracts from the flat neutral look.
A good quality nail varnish in a funky bottle. This nail varnish took a couple of coats to develop the rich colour I like, the first coat dries quickly, the second took longer and the top coat a little longer....exactly the same as any nail varnish I have ever used. The brush delivered good coverage, it is a good size and whilst I did not manage to cover the entire nail in one pass it was done in two passes. Longevity wise, as long as you look after your nails this will last, start washing up without gloves or digging the garden etc and it will suffer and the life span will be significantly reduced. Colour wise I found the on line shade chart to be a good representation of the product I received.
