Product description

Review

With Echo Island, Jared Wilson has done it again. A mystery and adventure--this story will keep you turning the page. You'll hear echoes of your own story and of the "Real Story," in which C. S. Lewis says "every chapter is better than the one before." This story, once you start, will grab your attention, and if you listen, will shape your life.

Champ Thornton, pastor and author of several books including The Radical Book for Kids and Why Do We Say Good Night?

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing story, kept on tracking the unfolding adventure with implications

While I think I own every book Jared C. Wilson has published, it is his two novels that keep attention rapt in our home. Years ago it was Otherworld, and when the new Echo Island was announcement I happily pre-ordered, to read and discuss with oldest son (13yo at the time). He read it first! In one sitting, before breakfast, on a night he won't soon forget. My wife went in labor late at night, and having setup proper supervision beforehand in such an event, we snuck out to the birthing center at the 11th hour.

On the kitchen counter were left notes and a couple new books for the special occasion: 2021 Guinness Book of World Records, and Echo Island. Our teenage son enjoyed waking to both, and that moment arrived earlier than planned. Somehow a suddenly-awake-all-night toddler brother woke his siblings and then happily perused picture book while oldest son pictured the happenings on Echo Island. (Note to Dads: hide the caffeinated Run Gum and don't set a pack near where gadgets are charged; toddlers will consume said gum.)

Later we discussed the storyline of Echo Island, and it seems our own trek was circuitous like that of Jason, Archer, Bradley, and Tim. Living in the PNW, we have visited islands like these, and now debate which one it is. His home, like Jason's was missing parents, and while that wasn't a surprise, each new chapter unfolding on Echo Island presented new twists and turns, amid eery silence. Our son has read lots of C.S. Lewis' writings (space trilogy, Narnia series), and his inspiration, George MacDonald, so the allusions there were noted and received with a smile. There were connections to myths and legends, with science-and-fiction themes intermingling, with the sprinkling of signs and symbols pointing to evidence for a Christian worldview. This is a show-and-not-just-tell story with theological and life implications. The Christian themes are not overt nor clumsily inserted, even as the characters are often clumsy with their connections, references and quick decision-making (as teens shall be!). It flows naturally in dialogue and plot. This is a coming-of-age story with vast implications, and it whet our son's appetite for reading and writing stories that have moral conviction, resourcefulness, honor, and truth-seeking at the helm. Highly recommend.

Wow, supernatural mystery with a touch of fantasy and a strong that makes you question reality itself? Where reality isn't even reality? That's this book. Like C.S. Lewis' Narnia, and Stranger Things Upside-down, the Underworld is a supernatural, reality inside out world, yet out of it. Right next to you even though you can't see it. A reality where anything can happen, and nothing is as it seems. This book really makes you question your life and your reality. Characters are very well fleshed out, and the plot is thick. I really enjoyed jt, and I can tell that this author put lots of time into Echo Island, just like The Author puts time into this reality. While you are reading this book, and hopefully enjoying it as much as I did, remember that you are always being watched..... you're never alone.
