Top reviews from Australia
There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
I have unfortunately had to spend money on a converter to allow it to work in Australian power sockets.. this is far from ideal and likely voids any warranty etc..
I should not of assumed they cater for overseas country needs even though it was Australian domiciled website.
Edit: I contacted WD to query the "out of region" warranty. They informed me that the drives will still remain under warranty and that you can claim the warranty within Australia.
I haven't opened this one but the design appears identical to the 8TB units I did shuck, as I'm using it for its intended purpose, as an external USB drive. In my case hanging off my NAS to rsync backup the NAS every night.
For those also using it as intended instead of shucking, the AC adaptor was physically different to my 8TB units, but electrically the same (12v 1.5A) - it was actually friendlier for side by side use in power-boards than the ones that the 8TB ones came with, though that could be total luck of the draw of course.
After unpacking, I discovered that power supply had American power plug/interface. I had to go out to get an adapter.
I watched a video on YouTube where someone ordered the same product in UK and, when he unpacked the product, I observed that he was supplied an American interface power to UK power adapter within the box.
I am confused as to why my box did not have a power adapter???
The WD 8TB drive works well otherwise and I have absolutely no complaints with the product.
The actual drive inside is a WD80EDAZ, probably used as an Enterprise drive. They run hot and idle around 10 degrees Celsius higher than my WD Reds. These sit at about 32 degrees in my system, other drivers are at 22-24.
Under load they will hit 60 degrees Celsius without good airflow so take that into consideration when setting up your system.
For those not shucking the drives I wouldn't bother buying them. Testing them in the case they come in the temperatures were even worse.
Great value for money but it remains to be seen how long it will last for.

Edit 5/23/18 RMA process was painless, easily accomplished online. Used normal RMA process; Turnaround between old drive arriving at facility and new drive shipping out was 2 days. All told, about a week. Will see how this drive shakes out over the next few months.
Edit: 8/28/2018. The RMA Replacement for the drive has also failed, almost exactly three months after delivery.
