Being an Israeli all my life I have an intimate familiarity with the cooking of Falastin and Al-Sham. This book has Shown me how much I did not know and made see the Palestinian-Israeli cocktail through the palestinian’s eyes. A must read For anyone interested in Palestinian culture.
This food may remind you of Ottolenghi's, however this book was not written by him but by his chef colleague Sami Tamimi. I noticed upon perusing this cookbook that the food is very family friendly, homestyle, comforting, traditional, etc. I have all six of Ottolenghi's cookbooks so far, and all are among the most highly inspirational in my collection. Looking through Sami's book, I can see myself cooking every single recipe multiple times, or even for the rest of my life! In other words, these recipes are all classics, whether they are Sami's originals, or riffs on a very traditional Palestinian dish. You can tell that Sami has a little kid love for nostalgic and grounding eating experiences. You will USE this book from cover to cover and delight your family and friends with many very hearty and comforting, but super sophisticated meals full of fresh, mind blowing middle eastern flavors.
I haven't bought a cookbook in 15 years because I have been cooking with recipes I find online. However, I saw so many great reviews of this book that I had to buy it. Every recipe is absolutely delicious. I liked it so much I bought copies for 2 of my sons. One son made 6 of the recipes for his son's 1st birthday party.
Suddenly Palestinian cuisine has become "trendy" - after tons of Israeli cookbooks in the last few years - look no more, Falastin is it! A wonderful historical and cultural counterbalance to the Middle East food traditions, Falastin fills a void, and it does it beautifuly.
Falastin is a beautiful cookbook filled with very interesting stories in addition to mouthwatering recipes. The photos are lovely of the food and the country, and very easy to make. I do have other Middle East cookbooks, but I think this one is my favorite. Great reading on a cold wintry day. Jeanne R.
I am a cookbook aficionado (it’s ALL i get from the library) and this is hands down, top 3 of all time. As a palestinian, I can confirm that these recipes are authentic, and the joy I feel seeing my people’s cooking immortalized in this book—just incredible. I’ve always maintained that palestinian food is too complicated to condense into a cookbook, but somehow Tamimis done it. He hasn’t sacrificed complexity, and yet few of the recipes are hard to follow (that isn’t to say they’re easy, though), and they all remain authentic. He also does have a few new takes here and there, which I love because that’s something for me to try, since I already know most of these recipes! The food is delicious, the photos are beautiful, and you can rest assure this is the real deal. Excited to have something to recommend to non-palestinians interested in our cuisine! Love love love
This is my favorite cookbook of the last year. It's beautifully photographed and written with a thoughtful mix of history and food culture. And the recipes I've tried so far (Shatta, Red Shakshuka, Summer Squash and Chickpeas, Labneh Balls, Charred Eggplant with Tahini and Herbs) have all been simple and amazing to eat. You won't regret adding this to your library!
This book was a real joy, the recipes are exciting and doable. The history of the area needs MORE airing! My only complaint is with all the mention of chilies......no idea what kind. Hot, mild or something inbetween.
This is a truly fantastic cookbook. The recipes are absolutely delicious, full of flavor, and fun to make. The pictures are great guides and are true to the recipes. There is a great variety of dishes, including very satisfying vegetarian main dishes. I can't wait to make even more out of this cookbook. Really highly recommended!
