Excellent audio quality with no audible hiss. Supports basically every decent codec and Bluetooth audio quality is the best I've heard. It doesn't drop out in normal use, although near lots of other devices in train stations it can have some distortion.

Has great battery life and I've never had it run out of battery while I've been using it.

The microphone is acceptable, not the best but still good enough for calls.

The control scheme is decent and you can skip chbage volume, answer calls etc.. but takes a while to get used to as some of the controls are double presses or require holding a button.

This miniature high achiever will make you second guess your first response to that question, the difference to me is in the bass, this unit powered my af140mk2 monitors perfectly! Amazing sound quality.

Bought this after I was unhappy with the sound quality from my previous purchase from another cheap brand(mpow).

Wanted a really good one with good clear and bass sound quality which the FIIO BTR3 does. No hissing sounds or interference. Also the build quality is nice and solid.

Very good and portable if you are on the go.
I mainly use it for my iPhoneXS, as I had a iphone6 before. I use the Ultimate Ears 7 IEM earphones.
Nice and small and have attached some pictures to show how it looks like.

Excellent sound, poor design

I used to own a Sony Ericsson WM600 for two years until I lost it. A wonderful piece of equipment which despite its limited SBC bluetooth protocol had a small on-screen display which was magical. Anyway, it was discontinued so I purchased a Samsung Level Link (the only dongle available at the time). It featured aptX which was an upgrade to my ears but the DAC left a lot to be desired. The volume output was also pretty poor - always on max out on the London underground. So I treated myself to this Fiio BTR3, on a whim to be honest because my Level Link still works perfectly.

Pros:

- the DAC: simply superb a huge improvement on my previous two bluetooth dongles! The sound is crystal clear and the noise level is so low I couldn't believe the total silence it produced whilst listening to a song where all instruments and vocals stopped for a beat.
- the DAC is powerful, insanely so, be careful when using high volumes. The BTR3 can really drive my B&W P7 Wireless very loud (yes, these headphones have bluetooth but only aptX so sound infinitely better with this Fiio DAC).
- The LED colour tells you which codec is being used (absolutely invaluable).
- With Fiio's music app (although a little unreliable) you can completely disable certain bluetooth codecs (e.g. HWA) to ensure your phone only uses the best (e.g. LDAC) - this is important as with my Samsung Level Link, after every phone reboot, my Samsung S7 edge would default to Samsung HD codec (inferior to aptx by my ears), and with my current Huawei, it would always default to HWA which I felt wasn't as good as LDAC.

Cons:

- This little device is heavier than the previous two dongles I owned. It doesn't go unnoticed.
- The 'premium' glossy surface is basically a guarantee for this dongle to slip out of your hands and onto the floor and get scratched (that's the first thing I thought taking it out of the package and lo and behold, I've dropped it more times in these few weeks of ownership than the two previous dongles combined over the six years).
- The clip. What can I say. Basically Fiio designed it the wrong way round. It makes no sense. To the point that the way you clip it ensures you are catapulting the device out of your fingers thanks to the 'premium' glossy surface. I contemplate, almost daily, disassembling the unit to see if I can flip the clip, and if not cut/sand off the clip to superglue a new one on the right way round. Really. It's that frustrating.
- Battery life: I find that I am charging this more often than my previous dongles; I don't know if it's because LDAC uses more battery power than SBC or aptX, or whether it is due to the fact that all my previous dongles auto-switched off after some time of no music playing, whereas Fiio never switches off. Apparently by design according to their forums.

In conclusion would I recommend? Absolutely YES if you are looking for a portable high quality DAC because the sound is simply brilliant and loud for such a small portable dongle. But be prepared to live with a poor design which will frequently infuriate your common sense.

I bought these to use with a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro's - and boy am I a happy bunny :)

Audio quality when the aptx HD codec is used is simply amazing - I have another FIIO product and the DAC in that is also very good - so not surprised.

What I am surprised about is the amazing battery life from such a small unit. Even at very loud volumes powering these relatively power hungry closed cup headphones, I've happily used this for 6-7 hour stretches on a single charge. Volume level is very good indeed - plenty loud enough for me.

Only one slight niggle - I'm using a bluetooth transmitter that can use aptx HD and aptx LL - just like this FIIO receiver - but seems they always pair using aptx HD. Occasionally I would prefer to use the low latency version for when I'm gaming or watching TV - as their is some sync delay evident. Doesn't seem to be anyway to prefer one codec over the other.

Overall tho - great product - if you've got a decent set of pro audio cans and want to make them wireless - don't hesitate to click the buy button, you won't be disappointed.

This Bluetooth adaptor is seriously impressive and great value

FiiO is a Chinese audio manufacturer with a good reputation for high quality products. And the FiiO BTR3 is a seriously impressive Bluetooth adaptor which allows you to use audiophile headphones physically separated from your digital audio player (DAP), whether a mobile phone or a dedicated player.

First and foremost it is a very rare adaptor that offers all the most common Bluetooth audio codecs including aptX, aptX HD and, most importantly, Sony's LDAC codec. LDAC gives you near wired quality audio but isn't available on most Bluetooth devices. Second, the sound quality from the DAC chip is very good. Plugging in Sennheiser HD595 headphones or Sony N3 earphones produces excellent results. But beware: the BTR3 is capable of very high volumes so make sure you turn the volume right down before trying for the first time. While I haven't tried it to make a phone call, the adaptor does have a built-in microphone for hands-free operation.

The quality case is made of metal with a glass or plastic screen behind which the FiiO logo is illuminated by a multi-colour LED to indicate the adaptor's various states. On the back is a robust clip allowing you to clip it to your shirt, etc. There are two push-buttons on the side and a rocker switch for volume. The first switch is simply for power. The second has different functions according to context eg, to answer a call or to pause music. The volume control rocker also allows you to change music tracks if held down for more than two seconds, but this makes adjusting the volume a little tricky as you have to repeatedly press the + or - to increase or decrease volume

FiiO's Achilles heel is language. The BTR 3 user manual is sufficiently understandable to get going but is very difficult to fathom out which lights show under which conditions despite the information being laid out in table format. And some of it seems plain wrong. So, for example, when I connect using LDAC - confirmed on my phone and my DAP - the FiiO flashes a pinky colour rather than the supposed white stated in the manual. And initially I had no idea from the manual what light were supposed to be shown when charging. In practice it seems that the light goes solid with the current codec colour when charging and powered up, or red when powered down. And when fully-charged and off the light goes out.

My overall verdict: For around £60 the BTR3 is great value offering all possible common audio codecs coupled with outstanding sound quality especially when used with the LDAC codec.

Great sound when it's not dropping out....

Purchased this after reading various reviews confident it would meet my requirements. After 2 days of testing it's now been returned for a full refund.

Sonically the BTR3 was impressive, it made my selection of Etymotics, Shures and even my HD650's sound good when connected to decent sources using the better codecs although it didn't drive the 650's to high levels but that was expected of a device this size.

Unfortunately it wouldn't not hold a stable connection, even when using lower rate codecs, if anything broke the line of sight it generally cut out after a second. The line of sight was good up to 3 meters but beyond that it started to drop. If anything got in the way, it dropped. My main use case is to drive IEMs whilst leaving my source in my backpack, a distance of approximately 1 meter but sadly the BTR3 was unable to hold a connection despite being clipped on my collar. I can only presume that my clothes / body was too much for the signal. This is not a problem for my P7 Wireless or even my cheap QY7's.

I decided maybe this was a faulty unit but after reading a few forum posts online it seems this is not uncommon. Perhaps there has been a faulty batch, either way this product did not work for me.

Having said all that there are enough reviews to back up it's performance in general, it was great when it wasn't dropping out but I won't be trying another.
