5.0 out of 5 stars The elves inside must be microscopic…!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 August 2020
My Master & Dynamic MH40s have been neglected, recently: superseded by my Bose QuietComfort 35 IIs… – the principal justification being the lack of wires necessary to pump high-quality music into my rapidly-ageing ears [plus/via the Oticon BTE (Behind The Ear) hearing-aids perched atop them] as I womble around the house: locked-down like a ship’s hatch in a storm; shielded like a knight in a joust….

Now, there’s nothing about the QC 35 IIs’ sound to complain about: it is as clean and sharp as our new breadknife; and they are really very good at distributing music around the interior of my noggin in a way that is immensely pleasing). However, there is a reason my MH40s have been my go-to (wired) cans for the last year or so: and that is some sort of subjective – and therefore almost indefinable – character. (If my memory isn’t pulling pranks, that is.) But would – could – said “character” emerge from a box roughly the size and heft of a 9v battery?

Yes! (Phew.) So – not yet, anyhoo… – don’t bother fiddling around with the settings! [Well… apart from maybe entering your favourite headphones’ specifications into the necessary accompanying app (FiiO Control); then almost certainly upping the BTR5’s volume – which is independent of your chosen player’s (in my case, an iPhone XR), and goes all the way way up to a Spinal Tap-marmalizing 60.] Definitely don’t touch the equalizer!

All the depth (some cracking bass, Gromit!); the warmth; the wide soundstage (somehow/magically broader than my actual cranium); the clarity; the separation of voices (including those of the instruments, of course); the, well, overall yumminess of the MH40s, is back… – and some! Almost as good as driving them through my big black box of a Sony amp and Cambridge Audio DAC; and somewhat better than using them wired to my iPhone (even with Master & Dynamic’s proprietary cable). Just wonderful. Wonderful! (My lips are currently forming an arc that connects to, and mirrors, the one sat atop my bonce!)

I shouldn’t have expected any less, really, as I have a FiiO E17K Alpen in my arsenal: which sometimes sits comfortably (it tells me) in a K5 on my desk, next to my Chromebook, etc., etc., etc.… – currently (well, they were, earlier this week) pumping nicely-scrubbed and finely-fettled electrons into my well-worn AKG K702s… – all of which have served me well for many years (especially when writing reviews, programme notes, etc.).

Tested on a broad range of Travis songs, I am stunned. I am yet to try my favourite Elgar, Christian Scott, or Red Method and so forth [not a band, just a bit of discursive filler (not dissimilar to that available from B&Q (although other DIY outlets are available))]. But – as I was saying some time ago… – should this extremely clever little device [it probably has a PhD in happiness (and surely one in acoustics)] actually disappoint on a wider variety of music (which I doubt, somehow), I shall report back. [If you don’t hear more from me (here), please assume that I am still smiling!]
