About the Author

Colin McCrate and Brad Halm started the Seattle Urban Farm Co. in the spring of 2007 to answer one simple question: Does anybody need help setting up a vegetable garden? Turns out, quite a few. In addition to building gardens, including the award-winning, rooftop design for Seattle's Bastille restaurant, and providing private gardening instruction, they teach community classes and lead urban farming workshops. After getting their start working on farms and studying organic food in the Midwest for several years, McCrate and Halm now live in Seattle. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

Brad got his start growing food in college in a small vegetable garden at The Homestead, an experiential living center at Denison University. His interest piqued, he went on to apprentice on organic farms at Stratford and Crown Point Ecology Centers in Ohio. A few seasons of farming brought him to the realization that growing food would be his life's vocation. After serving as the CSA manager at Village Acres Farm in Pennsylvania for several years, he moved to Seattle to co-found the Seattle Urban Farm Company, a business that designs, installs, and maintains edible gardens for residential and commercial customers. He's been helping people build and care for their urban farms ever since. On weekends, Brad keeps busy by teaching classes on organic gardening and urban chicken care, and learning Jethro Tull songs on the guitar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read before you decide on a garden spot!

This book covers it all. When we started to plan our garden, we got this book first. I am so glad we did! I read several other gardening books, and while they were all helpful, none of the other books came close to this one in terms of breadth and depth of useful material. It covers deciding where to put it, how big to make it, and what shape it should take. It covers what to do about irrigation, soil, fertilizer (hint: go organic), and more. It covers what kinds of seeds to get, how to plan what to plant when, and how/why to do crop rotation. It goes into the main crops you might grow, what to watch for, and what you can learn from each crop.

The authors run a Seattle home gardening business and I live in Utah. It is a completely different climate, and I feel like they did a good job making it generic enough to work for any location.

I am on my third garden season and I am still learning, but there are things you can only do when you are planning your garden (like out it in the sunshine), and I am so glad I had this book to help with the planning.

I was recommend this book so I checked it out from the library and I LOVED it. I had to buy it because it is a must have for gardeners. It is well written, organized and easy to understand regardless of how much gardening experience you have. My favorite part is the month by month guide on what you shoud be doing in your garden. They also go through tons of plant care and provide tons of examples on how to design gardens of all shapes and sizes.
