The book deserves 5 stars plus.
I am no instructor of Yoga. I do practice yoga but what called my attention to the book is the fact that the author is a professor of kinesiology so I thought, he knew how to explain movement and relate it to the yoga poses.
I was wowed by the way he makes things so clear. My knowledge of anatomy is pretty advanced, but David nails it! The language is adequate to the professional and the laymen.
If you want to understand movement, I urge you to buy this book.
Shame that there are not more books around written by Mr. Keil. We would all benefit in learning from him.

Functional Anatomy of Yoga is a rare gem. This book enables both the casual reader and the seasoned practitioner to understand and implement the anatomical structure and function of the body in yoga. Written with a conversational tone, the book delivers the complex subject of human anatomy in a way that is both provocative and clear. The underlying theme of the book is integration. David Keil outlines how yoga teachers and practitioners can utilize a deeper understanding of their anatomy as they approach the larger scheme of yoga. How do the supposed "parts and pieces" of the body synchronize to support integrated movement? Finally, how do the various yoga postures interrelate from the perspective of functional anatomy? Not only is David Keil an authority on the subject of anatomy, but he also has the wisdom and first-hand experience of a skilled yoga teacher and practitioner. He has been presenting the subject of anatomy in a way that is interesting, meaningful, and applicable to teachers and students alike since 2000. Beautifully illustrated throughout with colour images and photographs to clearly explain the concepts and asanas, Functional Anatomy of Yoga will assist you in reaching new heights in your yoga practice using the "laboratory" of the body and the tools of yoga asana.

I bought this book not just because I'm hoping to train as a yoga teacher soon, but also because I suffer with lower back problems and I wanted to understand how I can use yoga to overcome it without putting unnecessary strain on my back. Although it is a fabulous book, it is very in-depth and I find myself zoning out trying to understand it! Maybe I need the video series to fully understand everything!

Currently doing a yoga teacher training programme. I’ve read some articles by this author and liked the way anatomy was explained.
This book did not disappoint. It covers the body starting at foot working up through each section of the human body and all areas are covered comprehensively.
Excellent book for those with some knowledge of anatomy and yoga.
