OK "travel" router is a bit of a misnomer these days as not too many people are travelling but the ability to connect via wire or Wifi and be setup as a router, repeater or AP means this can be used both at home and on the go and look good doing it.
Security is one of the hallmarks of the Gl.iNet range, and the ability to support Wireguard and OpenVPN server/client , DNS over HTTPS, Tor etc are all included as standard. In this day and age you need to be careful where and how you access data and be secure doing it.
If you need support, there's a great user forum as well as a helpdesk (though be aware it's based on SE Asian timezones).
Running OpenWRT is the icing on the cake. I found Gl.iNet when I had a router that never received firmware updates and where I was stuck with whatever the vendor built in. Updates are regular with these devices and often will be the result of users reporting issues. With OpenWRT I can install any of the OpenWRT repo modules to extend the abilities of the router to do whatever I need ( Transmission BT, adblock, DLNA, Shadowsock etc) . While there's a neat interface over the top of OpenWRT making common functions easy to setup, you still have full access to OpenWRT and LUCI and of course CLI if you need it.
If you're looking for a mini router that's just as much at home as it is on the road, certainly consider the Beryl.

The WiFi range is good enough for an apartment but will probably be a little weak if you plan to use in a house.
I was initially tossing between the MT1300 Beryl and the MV1000W (Brume-W) as they both had their strengths and weaknesses. The Brume-W has a faster SoC which would provide higher VPN performance, however at a higher cost.
I have the Beryl attached behind my main router. NordVPN does not support WireGuard on router which means I must use the slower OpenVPN protocol which tops at around 15Mbps. This is actually fast enough and I hardly notice the drop in bandwidth when browsing. For comparison, I would normally get +70Mpbs on VPN.
The advantage of running the VPN client on router that there is no impact on the battery life of your devices.
The phone app lets you configure quickly the VPN for certain VPN providers. Very handy if I want to change servers quickly.
LuCi interface is not installed by default.
To sum up, I am very happy with this tiny router. I would have liked if it performed better on OpenVPN. But at this price it is reasonable value for money and I recommend it!
UPDATE: After enabling Software Flow Offloading and Hardware Flow Offloading, the VPN throughput has improved by 1-2 Mbps

The other issue I found is that connection to admin page is not secured. I am also yet to find out how to secure this.
Overall, it is a great little router for travelling.
Update: The router is not the cause of Amazon app error. It is the network the router connects to. I am still to find a solution to secure the unsecured admin page using HTTPS.
Very impressed! Been working like a champ ever since.
