i've been really getting into this older music lately, i think i'm getting tired of the same old same old. if you don't have any of her music get this album because it spans her best years as a recording artist. blues, soul and r&b. the production is good in terms of sound quality. She has one of the most distinct voices in the business. check out a legend and enjoy.
What's strange is Billie's voice in itself isn't a marvel. She didn't have much range and she wasn't a master of voice gymnastics Ala Whitney Houston, but Billie had a lot of soul. I used to listen to Billie as a kid....I HATED it! I was too young to understand what all the fuss was about....Until I got older and then it hit me, Billie was amazing!
Listen to "Strange Fruit". I don't think there was a performance of that caliber in music until that song was released. Bessie Smith was a great Blues singer, but it was up to Billie to be the empress of what we today call classic Jazz and boy, was Billie a knockout. This listener cries every time I hear "Trav'lin Light". Listen to how Billie sings that song or as they said back then, reads that lyric. Absolutely incredible! You'd swear you were right with her.
There have been a lot of compilations released since her death, but "Gold" is the most thorough. It crosses across all of Billie's eras. From the young Billie to the dark and tortured soul of a woman figuratively on her death bed. It's all here. The CD is beautifully remastered and features a thick booklet filled with great info and photos.
Billie was a one of a kind and they'll never be a voice like that again. She was a master at not just Jazz, but blues as well. Her voice in a technical sense had little, but in a musical sense....a "feeling sense" she had EVERYTHING. And this compilation shows that. What a great talent Ms. Holiday was. Get this compilation! This has all her hits and at two discs is a good bargain. Get it before it goes out of print! This is the one to get. 5 stars out of 5 stars
