It was exactly what I was looking for because the car I wanted to fit it to has sensors fitted to the rear view mirror and takes up a lot of space so I really needed a small camera , the Garmin mini is ideal .
Awesome idea & actually worked amazing for the first 60 seconds. Then it crapped out... and I wasted over two hours trying to fix it (without success).
Seemed easy to setup. Installed it on my windshield, downloaded the app, everything looked great. My SD card appeared to be recognized, I could stream live footage, look clear and crisp. I was excited.
Then it downloaded a firmware update... and now the camera doesn't work. After the firmware update, it refuses to recognize the microSD card. I confirmed the SD card was successfully recording data prior to that update. Tried other microSD cards - no luck. After update, it also stopped "live streaming" to my phone. So basically it is now useless. And worst of all - I can't find a way to revert back the firmware.
Now I've wasted two hours of my life struggling with this dashcam - for something that should've only took 5 minutes to setup.
I will be returning this product. Got 1 minute of pleasure - and 2 hours of headaches. In conclusion: I DO NOT recommend you buy this dash cam!
The DashCam 66W gets very hot very quickly when recording at max resolution. The bottom of the camera gets so hot it is uncomfortable to touch. I can’t see that being very healthy for the SD card that lives right next to the hotspot.
It also does not remember the initial settings and asks for the country/locale and language every time it starts. It defaults to United States (and mph) and to set it to Canada one has to scroll all the way to the beginning of the list every time you start the camera/car (it does not skip from Z to A).
Additionally, it sometimes fails to connect to the phone app (and it will make your phone jump from WiFi to mobile data when it does).
I checked for any updates hoping they would solve the problem, but according to the app, the camera had the latest firmware (as of Sept 16, 2019).
I gave it two stars, as the footage is of decent quality. However, with all the points above, I can’t recommend it and will be returning the product.
Buy something else. This unit while nice and compact, will not connect to my phone via the app. Video quality is subpar for this price range. When hardwired to the standard install for dash cams it will keep losing power if your vehicle has eco mode stop start when at traffic lights... the battery does not last long enough to retain operation when this vehicle feature kicks in. (There are hacks to get around this on the web). All in all there are MUCH better devices on the market in this price range. Support for my issues with Garmin have been horrendous. No response to emails at all. Calls have been in queue forever. No call backs. Will never buy another Garmin product ever again.
Nice dash camera. I like it a lot. However I’m having a problem with the audio when reviewing/exporting video. The camera will only play back audio on “saved” (3 minute clips) but will not play audio or export it, on any other video. Example; Lets say I have a few hours of video on the camera, and I find a portion I want to export, so I trim it (let’s say a 5 minute piece from hours of video). When I view the trimmed video BEFORE exporting, no audio plays. Ok, no big deal, I’ll export it, and it’ll be there then, right? Negative... It simply will not play/export audio, even though the audio is on, and “export with audio” is selected. It will export audio from the saved clips (3 minutes) but there’s no way to trim and save video. You can only save video in real-time, otherwise you can review and export it later from the unsaved video, but there won’t be any audio. Other than that, I like the camera. I just wish I could figure out how to fix this.
I bought this Garmin dashcam 56 model for my second vehicle, since I already have the 55 model (now discontinued) for my truck which I was happy with. The main difference is the wider field of view of 140° compared to 120° of the 55 model - the wider field of view means that objects will be smaller in the image (personally I liked the 120° view, since it captured enough of the critical image without loosing important detail considering the MP of both cameras is the same). The 56 model can accommodate a 512 GB micro SD memory card whereas the 55 model a 256 GB card. I also like the fact that this new model can be used with an app that can be hooked up to a total of 4 cameras (I have not tried this yet) and it also has the "parking mode" feature if you buy the separate cable for it, plus they both have voice commands (which I like). Some people don't like the small magnetic mount, but I like it because it leaves a very small "footprint" (compared to a suction cup) and keeps the look stealthy. Both models are the same size and I have not had any issues with them so far.
I'm surprised how unreliable this camera is. I thought a product from Garmin would be better. Says it will detect motion, it might if it stays powered on. I would have to say that over 75% of the time, the camera was not even on while driving. I would have to unplug it and plug it in. It was 50/50 if it would power up after that. Tried a few different 12v to USB sockets and cords, same result. The last few days, it would not power up at all. Thankfully this all occurred before my Amazon return deadline. The app is also choppy and unreliable as well.
