Product description

The Supreme hook holding power that our vises are famous for has been passed down to the Montana Mongoose. The new design of this rotating vise has been refined for maximum efficiency. The new addition of the rotation lock screw and the new fine tension screw allows complete resistance control while rotating. The new delrin block is one of the smoothest bearing material available. The cam lever can be locked in a forward or backward position, allowing more clearance while tying. The sleek & agile design of the MT Mongoose will ensure a comfortable hand position while tying. The new addition of the extension handle allows a choice of a longer rotating handle. 360 true rotation. Tempered steel jaws will securely grip hooks from 4/0-28's. The MT Mongoose comes complete with FREE accessories: C-Clamp, Pedestal, Bobbin Cradle, Material Clip, Supreme Bobbin, Hackle Gauge, and Deluxe carrying case. Lifetime warranty. Made in the USA.

I like everything about this vise except the size and weight of the pedestal base...…. Too small and Too light....should be a 5"x at least 8" with a weight of around 4 #s …… everything else is great....Come on Griffin you can do better....
Alterations as follows...….
I know that this is overkill ….7" X6" X 3/4"....scrap steel that a friend had and he welded the post on so I could attach the vise....I cleaned it and painted it weighs in at about 4lbs....this "bad boy " aint going no where

Had a small problem with the jaws.... contacted Griffin and Holly took over in a big way she listened o my problem and came up with a solution immediately...…. You don't have to worry about customer service with Griffin.... it is TERRIFIC..... ask for Holly and she will solve and problem you might encounter with the vise....Highly recommend the company ….

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Hook Holding Power, Awkward Design
Reviewed in the United States on 31 December 2020

This vise has lots of pros, to be sure: it comes with a pedestal base and c-clamp, bobbin, a bobbin threader, bobbin cradle and a a nice plastic carrying case with interior foam padding. You can easily take it on vacation or to a fly tying class. Other standouts:

- The jaws are excellent, and hold a wide range of hook sizes easily. They are easier to set than the Odyssey Spider which doesn’t have the cam lever of the Mongoose. The jaws are thicker too but still taper to a fine point (I included a pic). Aside from a Regal, they are the easiest jaws I’ve used and they hold hooks extremely well.
- the head can pivot up or down, but I don’t think I’d personally use this. It also requires an Allen screw to tighten or loosen this.
- once set up, the inline rotation is adequate.
- the jaws themselves can slide up and down to keep numerous sizes hook shafts in the axis of the vise’s rotation. It’s easy to adjust. I included a video.
- it’s weird but I like the little D handle that makes the rotary action like a little crank. It’s comfortable.
- the materials clip is genius

Stuff I don’t like:
- I think it’s tough to set up the rotary drag how I like it. If it’s too loose, the main rotary shaft wobbles all over in the stem/vertical post. To snug everything up, the drag friction is more than I’d like. The process of ‘tuning’ this part isn’t intuitive.
- The included instructions could use some fleshing out.
- The pedestal is too small/lightweight. But the Mongoose not only has its jaws almost at the far edge of the vise, the head is also offset from the main vertical post. Sometimes when wrapping on estaz or chenille the vise wants to tip back and forth. Not much, and I’m not an aggressive tier, but enough to be slightly annoying. It makes the vise seem top heavy to me. If you use the c-clamp then much of this section may be irrelevant to you.
- the overall build quality seems kind of cobbled together from various parts and materials, like a Frankenstein’s monster. I’m sure it was to keep the cost down, but subjectively it doesn’t FEEL as heavy duty as other vises I’ve tried out.
- it really needs to have some sort of oil placed around the rotating shaft to keep things as smooth as possible. Sewing machine oil, 3-in-1, or something.

Overall, the vise is highly regarded at this price point and very popular. The Mongoose has a lot of great pros, and a lifetime warranty too. But a fly tying vise is also very personal, and this one wasn’t for me. If possible, try these vices in person. It will save you a hassle.
