The sound quality is very nice. Definitely not as good as a Sony PCM-D100 when it comes to very quiet sounds but still very good. The versatility is fantastic. This is probably the most versatile recorder ever made! The build quality leaves a bit to be desired. The Sony PCM-D100 has the best sound and a far superior build quality than any Zoom recorder. Zoom recorders are more versatile and budget friendly. The Sony has a very high-end all metal construction while the Zoom recorders tend to be ABS plastic. The H6 is no exception. If you need the best sound quality and the best build quality ever, buy the Sony PCM-D100. If you need very good sound and versatility, by a Zoom recorder (the Zoom H6 is the most versatile in my opinion).
I love the ability to plug XLR mics into it and do multitrack recording. If you plug a quality XLR mic into this and know what you're doing, you can create professional grade work. The battery life is fantastic as well. I wouldn't mind spending a bit more though for better materials. This has WAY to much plastic and the plastic they are using isn't anything fancy either. That is my biggest complaint. Unit feels a bit top heavy as well. The case they make for this thing is a bit disappointing and makes me nervous. The display is also a pain to see in bright, direct sunlight. Most of the time I can see it but sometimes I wish it had an oldschool back-lit LCD display. The headphone output also blocks the volume buttons a bit and the scroll wheel is a bit finicky at times. I wish they would have used buttons instead. I wish all the controls were on the front to.
At the end of the day, everyone has different needs and preferences. I have different recorders that I use for different things. Buy a recorder that meets your needs. I love the Zoom H6s versatility but for some things I just use a different recorder. Overall though, the H6 is an excellent choice.
