Absolutely love the Zoom H6. Its not an inexpensive piece of kit so I spent a lot of times watching countless reviews/tutorials on YouTube. I needed an easy to use, reliable, versatile product to handle audio for multiple guests on my podcast. This fits my needs perfectly. It is very easy to use, menus are simple and very intuitive.
I just got my Zoom H6 yesterday. Wow. What an amazing piece of tech.
I noticed a lot of people are confused at what they are getting. It clearly states it's the 2020 version. Yes it's disappointing they removed the extras and kept the price higher without adding anything new that we know about. Just the skin and it's all black. That is a terrible decision by Zoom. But that said, I still love the all black and it's worth the price.
I was fortunate to find someone on FB Market place that sold a brand new kit with the accessories that I needed (the missing pieces) for $100.00. It was basically everything except the recorder. I love the how the law of attraction works.
I was playing its use is really unlimited in my opinion for what I can do with it. I got external dynamics mics to add.
I got this because my interface only has two inputs and sometimes I need more. I love the unit because I can take it to the church building and rig up several mics on the grand piano, then mix everything later at my workstation. It is not hard to use out of the box but there's a bit of a learning curve for advance functions. Well worth reading the manual first.
The sound quality is very nice. Definitely not as good as a Sony PCM-D100 when it comes to very quiet sounds but still very good. The versatility is fantastic. This is probably the most versatile recorder ever made! The build quality leaves a bit to be desired. The Sony PCM-D100 has the best sound and a far superior build quality than any Zoom recorder. Zoom recorders are more versatile and budget friendly. The Sony has a very high-end all metal construction while the Zoom recorders tend to be ABS plastic. The H6 is no exception. If you need the best sound quality and the best build quality ever, buy the Sony PCM-D100. If you need very good sound and versatility, by a Zoom recorder (the Zoom H6 is the most versatile in my opinion).
I love the ability to plug XLR mics into it and do multitrack recording. If you plug a quality XLR mic into this and know what you're doing, you can create professional grade work. The battery life is fantastic as well. I wouldn't mind spending a bit more though for better materials. This has WAY to much plastic and the plastic they are using isn't anything fancy either. That is my biggest complaint. Unit feels a bit top heavy as well. The case they make for this thing is a bit disappointing and makes me nervous. The display is also a pain to see in bright, direct sunlight. Most of the time I can see it but sometimes I wish it had an oldschool back-lit LCD display. The headphone output also blocks the volume buttons a bit and the scroll wheel is a bit finicky at times. I wish they would have used buttons instead. I wish all the controls were on the front to.
At the end of the day, everyone has different needs and preferences. I have different recorders that I use for different things. Buy a recorder that meets your needs. I love the Zoom H6s versatility but for some things I just use a different recorder. Overall though, the H6 is an excellent choice.
This Recorder is a perfect audio interface for the SHURE SM7B Mic. I use it for the XLR capabilities. If you are looking for a portable setup, look no further than this Recorder.
As far as the sound quality of the actual on board microphone, it’s not bad in a non windy environment for ASMR type of projects. It really depends on what you plan on using this recorder for. If you need something to serve as a portable Audio interface for XLR microphones, look no further than this bad boy. :)
