I used this to connect a Davis VantagePro2 weather station with a serial output to a network, and used weeWX software on a Linux workstation to view the weather data. You can use socat on the unix side if your software doesn't support using an IP and port.
This version has an eight pin connector. You will need to wire up a power supply ( I used 5 volts), an Ethernet jack (wires 1,2,3,6) and two wires to a serial connector. You may also need to add some control signals to get the serial device to communicate. For the weather station, this was not an issue.
When connected to the network, it will get an address via DHCP. It will show up as Eport-EE10 on your router lease table.
There is a version of this product that is terminated with an RJ45, DB9 and power plug that might be more convenient if you don't have wire, jacks and a soldering station.
The supplied web interface is simple. There are documents and firmware images on the Highflying site. The device appears to have a great deal of functionality.
