Sound: definitely lots of bass for me. even too much for me. this makes my powerbeats pro sound like minimum bass.... so on my P30 pro, i have to adjust the EQ to bring it down a bit and raise the treb 2/3. however when listening to rap and hip hop songs, bass was punchy and accurate for me. maybe some of my songs weren't HD quality ????Donno. Rock and Pop can get too bassy at times, (before adjusting EQ) so this freebuds needs a little more treb hopefully in the next version. but after adjusting the eq on my phone. it was good.
ANC: definitely need to use the huawei app AI LIFE to adjust the ANC knob to the suitable level for my ear. its very noticeable deduction (no music playing),i can still hear ppl talkin tho but its like 65% less. with music playing, can't hear ppl talking. higher pitch sound does get in more than lower ones, its muffled like maybe 30%, but low pitch sound is about 70%ish. for open ear design and the level of comfort. Im happy with it and definitly worth the money.
Comfort: 8/10, i dont get uncomfortable with in-ears headphones, so this open ears design is no issue for me. the size and shape fits perfectly.
Battery: only had it for couple of days, can't say much but with about 1 hrs listening, with on and off and back in charge case and out for use, the case has 80% battery and earbuds charged to 100% so can't comment much, so far so good i say.
Seeing these buds on Amazon with a BONUS wireless charger unit made me wonder if I should lay out this amount of money for a pair of earbuds.
I usually purchase the cheaper, lower end/brand buds, but am somehow always disappointed with the sound quality.
Buying these Huawei buds are the best thing I have ever done. The sound quality is just great and I can listen for hours on one charge. The noise cancelling also works like a charm. I live next to a school and can always hear the kids screaming through my music. This is no longer the case. Love Huawei.....
- I consistently get about 2 hours of use with each bud (Noise Cancelling off, Volume ~50%, primarily during voice calls). This is a little unfortunate as I often have Zoom calls that go for 3 or so hours
- The Noise Cancelling mode does next to nothing
- The side controls are quite unreliable, it works about 33% of the time in my experience. Also the Google Assistant trigger only works with the screen on (I use a OnePlus 5)
So they're generally alright for podcasts and calls, but the short battery life and unreliable side buttons are underwhelming since they were part of why I chose these buds.
Sound quality is good in general but having only two 'touch settings' (one for each) and not being able to adjust volume is a bit shame. Battery life is not perfect, but if you charge it daily, you can use the case like 3 times to charge the earbuds. it charges quickly. Bluetooth connection is quite stable and I haven't had a problem with it so far. Even when I moved far from my phone and change rooms, it stays connected- tried it both with my Huawei P30 pro & my iPad, both working fine.
Top reviews from other countries
@ Wear Detection feature works ONLY with Huawei devices that too with EMUI 10 & above, so note that.
@ Max Volume of the buds varies from device to device and within app as well ( read the details below )
@ ANC is not a gimmick for sure, but not super effective as well ( read the details below )
@ These buds do work with all the android device as well as iOS device, but has some limitations ( details given below )
@ Max Battery life 4 hours with ANC OFF and buds on 40-50% volume ( read the detailed stats below )
@ There's NO Clarity on whether these are Water-resistant or not. Some reviews says it has ipx4, some says it doesn't has any rating. I have wrote to huawei and awaiting reply. I will update the review once I get any response.
This is very long review divided into 3 parts namely, Quick Overview, Full Detailed review and Comparison with Apple Airpods gen 2.
So if you are really looking to invest 13,000 rupees, then I highly advice to read it completely, to ease your decision.
I have completed 1 FULL Battery cycle of Case, that's over 20 hours of music & media, so following are the 1st hand observations,
●● If you want to get quick overview of the device, then read below else scroll down for Detailed Review ●●
# Buds are quite light weight and has all plastic design expect at the bottom, but look & feels premium.
# Case is very sleek and feel premium as well.
# Case supports wired as well as wireless charging.
# Buds are insanely comfortable to wear even for longer duration.
# Sound quality is premium and comparable to Apple's airpods gen 2.
# Has NO significant bass whatsoever, when considered the Price tag.
# Voice quality over call is excellent and best so far that I have heard on any tws earbuds.
# It connects and works with all Android & iOS device, but NOT all the features are usable.
# Wear Detection works ONLY with Huawei devices with EMUI 10 & above.
# ANC works well when it does, but there's Frequent interruption and breakage in NC. NOT helpful in outdoors.
# Battery backup is average and tops out to 4 hours on 40-50 % volume with ANC OFF.
# Charging is Quick and buds are charged within 30-40 mins.
Full Detailed Review :---
● BUILT QUALITY ●
● Carrying cum Charging Case ->
# Its very sleek and light weight as well, but at the same time feels quite premium.
# Has 2 LEDs placed inside the lid and outside the lid to indicate connection status & Charging stats respectively.
# Supports Wired as well as Wireless charging.
# Has room only for default buds, meaning you can't apply external silicon eartips to buds and keep buds in the case.
● Earbuds ->
# These are also sleek and light wight. Have same finish as on the case and feels premium, despite being all plastic.
# Has semi in-ear design, but are different from typical airpods.
# They are slightly curved inside towards the speaker grill, giving them smooth entrance to ears.
# These do supports external eartips ( which I am yet to try on ), but looking at he case cavity, they can't fit in the case with eartips on.
# These stay put in ears quite well, no matter you run or move with any intensity. Thus making them very apt for workouts as well.
# Overall, I am impressed with the built quality considering the price tag.
● COMFORT ●
# Thanks to the curved design, these are the most comfortable tws earbuds I have used till date.
# In the first battery cycle, I wore them straight from 100% to 0, lasting about 4 hours and expect couple of adjustment on right buds, I had no issues at all.
# After 10 mins, it felt like I haven't wore any buds in my ears, that comfortable these are.
*FYI, my ear canal are of medium size.
● LOUDNESS ●
# When used on my Huawei Y9 prime with EMUI 10, the loudness was excellent. I would say that was more than Airpods when used with iOS devices.
# All the music players, be it the default one or the 3rd party like youtube music, etc had SAME max volume on Huawei device.
# I was surprised to see that, max volume on devices other than Huawei were VARIABLE.
# I used it on Redmi K20, Samsung S8, iphone 6s, all resulting in variable max volume.
# What I observed was, default music players had almost slightly lower max. volume as when used on Huawei, but 3rd party app had max volume reduced to 60-70% ONLY.
* I personally was not very much disappointed with it, as I listen the music or media at 50% vol. all the time and I used 3rd party streaming apps only. But someone who is habitual of listening over that level and using 3rd party app, would certainly disappointed.
● SOUND QUALITY ( Bass, mids & lows ) ●
# Here again its the same story. There's variation when used with Huawei and Non-Huawei devices.
# In general, sound quality is quite good though.
# Vocals are crystal clear, without any distortion.
# Mids and lows are very well pronounced and distinguishable.
# Highs are crisp and fills that void in sound quality, which can be felt in many tws earbuds in or below this segment.
# Bass is Disappointing. Its not at all "booming" as advertised, but its just staunch enough to supplement the tracks.
# Overall sound signature is impressive and worth the price.
● ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION ●
# These certainly aren't gimmick and I was relieved when first tested, but not for long.
# It can be controlled from dedicated AI life app and has multiple levels to chose from.
# When turned ON, you can immediately feel the difference, despite these being semi in-ear buds.
# But consistency of ANC is very poor. I hardly used to get 5 mins of continuous ANC effect, after which there comes couple of mins of background sound filling in. And then suddenly ANC kicking in again.
# I tried resetting the device and checking it with other phones, but issue persists.
# After couple of hours of such occurrence, it irritated me and I now Don't use the ANC unless its very necessary.
# Also ANC is Not very effective in strong outdoor conditions like being in middle of traffic, but highly noticeable in the indoor condition, cancelling out good amount of heavy noises like Fan, etc.
P.S. when ANC is working properly, they produce the sound which is similar to when using fully in-ear buds with silicon tips, despite the fact that these aren't fully in-ear style.
● SOUND QUALITY OVER CALL ●
# This is the very reason I bought these buds and I must say that I am very impressed with it.
# Thanks to its wind-proof design tech and ENC, these are by far best tws in terms of Call quality.
# I literally tested it sitting next to table fan and the person on other side of call didn't noticed any disturbance at all.
# I also noticed a peculiar thing, that when I use only single bud, be it any side, the Voice quality improves significantly. Don't know what's the reason, but got same results on multiple devices. In any case its to my benefit only.
● CONNECTIVITY ●
# It connects within 2 seconds, be it Huawei or any other device, which is impressive.
# It has the connection animation, when using huawei device, which is exclusive.
# Connection range is also good enough, being almost 30 feet linearly without any interruption.
# It has Dual-sync bluetooth, which enable any single bud to be used, while other is in case for listening as well as for calling. This is available to non-huawei device as well.
# Latency is very low to the point that you won't notice any. This is good for gaming to be specific.
# Sadly, it doesn't connects to 2 devices at same times.
● CONTROLS & OTHER ●
# These have touch controls, sadly till date its limited to ONLY double tapping.
# There are various options to set of individual bud, what double tap would activate via AI life app.
# Its very disappointing to see that such premium buds, having hardware as well as software capability to handle more gestures, is limited to single one, while competition is offering more.
# It has Wear detection, again as mentioned, its Huawei exclusive and works perfectly in huawei devices only.
# AI life app shows detailed battery stats of each bud and case respectively in real time.
# via the same app, bud's firmware can also be updated. Out of the box, there were 2 firmware updates adding couple of feature in them rightaway.
● BATTERY PERFORMANCE ●
# Case charges from 0 to 100% within 1 hour, which is quite fast ( using wired connection )
# Both the earbuds when placed in case, charges from 0 to 100% within 30-40 mins, which also is quite fast ( see the image attached ).
# In 1 cycle charge of both the buds, case lost 25% charge, thus concluding that buds can be charged 4 Times using the case.
# When used the buds at 50% volume to listen music with ANC OFF, they lasted me exactly 4 hours ( see the images attached ).
# When used at 50% volume to listen music with ANC ON, they lasted me just about 3 hours.
# When used at 100% volume for calling, they lasted me close to 3 hours, which is slightly more than advertised.
# Overall, the charging speed is great, but the battery backup is just average considering the Price tag. Good enough to last for a movie session, casual listening, but certainly not a long distance commute partner.
● CONS ●
# Wear detection works ONLY with huawei devices and its a big let down. Buds make a tingling noise when put on, which signifies that sensors are detecting the wear-in, but firmware doesn't let them perform their intended purpose.
# There's significant variation in Max volume in multiple device, mostly to the downside of non-huawei devices.
# Bass is not impressive considering the price tag.
# Intermittent glitches in ANC, hampers the premium sound signature of buds.
# Controls of the buds is limited to ONLY double-tapping, despite the fact that these buds can handle much more more and competition is offering that.
# Battery backup is just average. I would have being very much satisfied with least 5 hours of backup on normal music playback with ANC off.
P.S. almost all the above mentioned cons are software related and can be easily eliminated with single firmware update, making these buds unbeatable. Huawei if you are listening, then please make these much needed changes :D
I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping to receive such updates before I fed up with the cons and sell them :P ...... just kidding. With huawei's reputation, I am very optimistic about updates.
●● COMPARISON with Apple Airpods Gen. 2 ●●
# I am comparing these 2, for the reason that these are very similarly priced, share similar form factors & features,
and I personally had both of these in my mind before purchasing the freebuds.
1. Design section -
Both the buds share similar if not the same design. Freebuds being slightly longer & thicker. Both supports wired and wireless charging.
Difference is freebuds stay put quite well in the ears even when there's intense motion, unlike airpods.
Winner - Freebuds 3.
2. Comfort -
Again due to similar design and form factor, they both are very comfortable. But thanks to freebuds dolphin design, these are slightly more comfortable and apt for longer duration.
Winner - Freebuds 3.
3. Loudness -
Freebuds were louder when paired with huawei phones, but when paired with any other android or iOS phones, max. volume drops significantly. Whereas airpods delivered me same max. volume across the platform and devices.
Winner - Airpods.
4. Sound Quality -
Here again, both the buds perform very well and competition is very tight. I personally felt freebuds to be better than airpods. Freebuds being more natural sounding. But Bass of freebuds is no were close to airpods.
Since I am not a bass lover, I prefer freebuds.
Winner - Freebuds 3.
5. Voice quality over call -
As mentioned in above review, currently there's no competition for freebuds when it comes to call quality in Indian market. They outperforms airpods or any other tws buds by miles.
Winner - Freebuds 3.
6. Connectivity -
Both performed similarly for me in connectivity segment, so no winner in this segment.
7. Controls & other features -
Certainly freebuds has more features built-in compared to airpods, but thanks to huawei exclusive features, it is in no way better compared to airpods. Except ANC in freebuds, which is flawed at movement I write this review, there's not much of a difference in them when considered cross-platform usage.
But mind that airpods have more gesture controls compared to freebuds, which gives them the edge.
Winner - Airpods.
8. Battery Backup -
With ANC turned off for freebuds, it still underperforms by 20% compared to airpods. Adding the total charge of case, freebuds are again lagging behind.
Winner - Airpods.
9. Accessories -
As airpods are in the market since couple of years, they have ton of accessories available at current movement. Freebuds being launched last month, obviously has none in Indian market.
Winner - Airpods.
Final Result - Freebuds -> 4 Airpods (gen. 2) -> 4
●● VERDICT ●●
If you are here, then I suppose you have read the complete review and I don't need to repeat anything already mentioned. I would just recommend freebuds blindly to anyone having Huawei Phone and needing a Premium TWS earbuds, they are just perfect for each other.
If you are iOS user, then stay away from these.
If you are Android user other than Huawei like me, then hold on for a month or so, and see if the said cons are resolved via firmware updates, if you want all the feature offered to huawei phones. But if your priority is calling and comfort like mine, then think no-more, these are it. Currently the best tws for android with the stem design.
Hope this review helps you make wise decision :D
First impressions - nice case, if a little light, buds fit about as well as airpods although how the tips attach to the stalk isn't quite as effective.
Easy enough to sync up once the AI app is downloaded - probably easier when using emui 10 which isn't widely available yet.
Volume goes nice and loud, although I've not heard much of the punchy bass advertised - in general better than the first gen airpods and Galaxy buds I've been using.
Latency is really good, not seen much delay when using YouTube or Netflix, although there appears to be a little stutter on how they stream, which may be fixed when the update is available.
Overall, impressed so far compared to the Galaxy buds I've been using, although I think they've been designed very specifically to work with an operating system that isn't available yet. Current score would be closer to 3.5
For reference, my requirements are as follows:
• Comfort, I want to be able to keep these in for long durations and not want to claw my ears off.
• Use them comfortably in bed with the side of my head on a pillow, so I can listen to audio books on a night time.
• Still hear the outside world on lower volumes, so I can use them at work and still hear if someone is trying to speak to me, or if my kids are crying on a night time.
• Run with them, and for them to stay in my ears with minimal loss of quality, easily skip tracks without getting my phone out, and hear if a car is screeching off the road and about to obliterate me on the kerb.
• Single ear use, and the quality to be good enough that I can engage with the content.
• Instant connection when placed in my ears, no faffing with apps or my phone.
• Discreet, not invisible so people think I’m talking to myself, but not bright white (the fruit equivalent) or the re-incarnation of the hands free kit’s from the 2000’s.
So, how do they compete?.....They do all of that. I don’t think there are many earphones that could compare.
Specifics that are worth a mention:
• They are extremely comfy, there is next to no stress on the ear, yet they stay in with heavy movement, possibly some sort of voodoo.
• The bass isn’t as bad as reviews suggest, it isn’t going to take your head “back to the club” but it’s excellent for buds that aren’t wedged in your ear canal, and average if you were looking at all buds in general. I found that if you mess around with the bud position, there is definitely a sweet spot for bass, and at that point it’s quite surprising.
• The noise cancelling is very slight, but in an office environment it’s excellent, it picks out the background hum of conversations and dulls them to insignificance (although not removing them altogether), yet still allowing you to hear when someone nearby talks to you.
• They’re black, so I don’t get “those looks” on a train.
If you are after something similar for your own needs, give them a go. I take these everywhere now as they’re so versatile.
