Bob C.
4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use with Furrion camera mount
Reviewed in Canada on 16 February 2020
I found this MC5111 product to be well designed and sturdy. I wanted something that would work with the Furrion camera mount on my trailer and this model is cheaper than the Furrion but has higher resolution images and an image reversal feature which the Furrion I looked at did not. I saw on the Haloview website that it is possible to remove the Furrion camera mount and mount this camera directly onto the rubber gasket. So at first I ordered only the MC5111 system and was happy to find it included an adapter to connect directly to my Furrion power cable plug. I started to mount the camera but realized that there would be a lot of wire and connectors sticking out which would not look very good, plus there was no rain shield for the camera. So then I ordered the B-F02 Furrion adapter bracket (from Haloview but sold on Amazon). This worked great - see the photo. It was a bit tricky getting all the wires and connected stuffed into the hollow back of the camera mount but I made it work. And the camera is tight against the mount to that keeps the rain out. I also noticed there was a hole where the Furrion antenna would have gone so I plugged that with some foam rubber and sealed the top with black electrical tape. By the way, if you need to know, the power plug on the camera is center-positive - I could not find this anywhere in the user manual or website but I measured it. And I learned that you CAN adjust the angle of the camera, so even though the Furrion mount faces quite low, I was able to adjust the camera so I can see down as well as back towards traffic.

As for the monitor, the suction cup worked well in my Ford Ranger but then the monitor was at an odd angle and so was the antenna, because the windshield is sloped a lot. I was going to use the bracket that was included (lots of options included with this unit) but I didn't want to drill holes into my dash. So I ordered an Amazon bean bag and that works well, with the supplied suction cup attaching to a plastic piece in the center of the bean bag. Plus this way it's easy to hide the monitor without leaving a bracket sticking up.

I have a 27 foot Forest River Salem trailer with metal cladding. I was surprised to get a good signal to the truck and a very clear image. However this is when parked. I haven't had a chance to try driving yet and I would not be surprised if the video disconnects from time to time, with a metal trailer, and based on reading other reviews. So I also ordered an external antenna (Haloview A-3M) just in case. I will have to screw a steel plate to the top of the trailer so the antenna can attach to it magnetically. Although one of the video reviews on the Haloview website shows a round metal piece included with the antenna, mine did not - perhaps it's a different antenna. Although I can't put the antenna far enough forward to have line-of-sight to the monitor, if I put it on the left side of the roof perhaps the signal can reflect off the passing cars. I almost bought a WiFi camera that uses my cell phone as a monitor but from what I read the signal strength is much less so it might not work with my rig.

Overall I am quite happy with the quality and with all the options included. The only reasons I did not give 5 stars is:
- The user interface on the monitor is a bit tricky to use - I was often pressing the wrong buttons until I got the hang of it, and the user guide is not as clear in that area as it could be.
- The suction cup gooseneck needs to be longer so the monitor can be positioned vertically without hitting the glass.
- The Furrion power cable adapter was labelled "BMW connector adapter" in the user guide, which confused me, and the user guide did not explain what to use this adapter for.
- The monitor connects to your cigarette lighter with a long cable (too long for my liking) but in fact you need to plug the monitor cable into an adapter cable and then into the cigarette lighter cable which means 1) there are two connectors hanging down in front of the dash, and 2) it really makes it too long - about 8 feet overall.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall an excellent system (with a few tweaks)
Reviewed in Canada on 2 November 2019
I purchased this to fit on my 22' Grand Design travel trailer. I chose this model because it mounts with the Furrion "pre-wired" system that was built into the Grand Design. I did not want the large 7" screen - that is why I chose the 5” model.

We just recently a 3,000 mile/4,800 km trip and here are my comments:
- The camera is great for providing the view of vehicles that are behind me. I have an average amount of trailer towing experience, but I have to say that having this is great to have. It removes a lot of stress by being able to see what is going on behind the trailer while driving. Subject to my comments below, the resolution and quality of the imaging is excellent.
- The camera was not a direct plug in with the pre-wired Furrion so that meant some custom wiring work.
- I drove about 1,400 miles and tolerated the screen freezes that occurred quite frequently. Mid-trip I bought and installed the Haloview S-5M 5DBi Magnet Antenna High Gain 2.4G Antenna Signal Booster Amplifier Modem Directional Adapter with 5M Cable for Haloview MC7101 MC7108 MC5101(S-5M) and it improved things considerably. There are almost no screen freezes anymore. If you buy this system and there are issues, then I would strongly recommend getting the high gain antenna.
- I did not mount the screen to my dash for a variety of reasons. However, the location of the antenna connector means that when you attach the screen to your windshield (in an SUV anyways) the screen cannot be oriented vertically. I added a 6” cable and placed the antenna on the side of the unit with double sided tape (2-Pack DHT Electronics RF coaxial coax assembly FPV Antenna Extension Cable SMA Female to SMA Male Right Angle 6’'). This allowed the unit to be oriented vertically and also the antenna is now also vertical - I assume that also aids in providing better RF connectivity to the camera. This is a design flaw in my view with this unit. They either need to place the antenna connector on the lower side of the screen and/or provide a deeper windshield mounting bracket to pull it farther away from the windshield.
- We mostly drove during daylight hours, but the bit of night driving we did, the camera provided decent imaging.
- As some other reviewers have pointed out, there is no rain hood on the camera. This should be added to the product. I came up with a temporary fix that is less than elegant, but seems to work.

So all in all, this camera system does what it is intended to do - improve the towing experience by making it safer and less stressful. It required some additional components and a bit of custom work to get it dialled in the way I wanted. If you go in knowing that this is likely not just plug and play, then I would recommend this system.
