Storyline -
The story is about a little girl called Handa going on a journey to take fruit to her friend as a surprise. But along the way Handa gets lots of different animals taking the fruit from her basket. When the basket is empty more fruit fall into the basket and at the end there is a surprise for not only Handa’s friend but for Handa too. Importantly, the words to the book are different to what the pictures show/say.
Early Years Teachers-
This book proved to be an invaluable resource on my teaching placements. As with this well respected and loved children's author, Eileen Brown, this is a great book with a good story line. It is so versatile and can be enjoyed by many ages. It is really easy to engage with as there are so many possible themes in the story which can be explored to a suitable depth dependent on the children's ages.
Themes include: fruits of the world/healthy eating, people, the world, surprises, transport, textures, senses e.g. taste, animals.
Activity ideas include: exploring various fruits leading onto a healthy eating topic and likes/dislikes; exploration of countries looking at similarities and differences; making a fruit salad, following a recipe; discussion around the colour and textures of different fruits e.g. spiky pineapple; types of animals, their habitats, textures of their bodies which could lead onto a visit to a zoo; various ways countries transport items e.g. on their head, by vehicles, by foot or water; could attempt to carry baskets on their heads, balancing and then timing each other in mini races.
The DVD is a great added extra and can be used to entice the children into the story.
Would recommend to any early years teacher or parent.

2 year old was instantly engaged with this book, asking me to read it at least 10 times in a row! Colours and illustrations are vibrant, and the story is fun, with the introduction of different fruits and animals. Plenty to talk about. He couldn't wait to show dada this evening, pointing to the picuturs and laughing at the animals stealing the fruit.

If your child hasn't read it for some reason, just buy it. It's an essential text for ages 3-6. Pictures have wonderful happy facial expressions. Google for activities and extensions to this book (order the fruit, animals, etc).

A gift for my daughter, simple African story. Sadly a page was torn, but that didn't detract from the lovely pictures and fun story. Good for identifying different tropical fruits and African Animals. If you liked this, try Handa's Hen, for more Handa and the storyworld set Kiboko, Twiga. Mamba and Duma, for the Animals and simple Swahili.

Everybody loves Handa's Surprise. It is such a fun book, with bright illustrations and an enjoyable, repetitive story which children love to hear and join in with. It introduces lots of interesting fruits, too - the basis of a good fruit-salad making session! Most schools read this book at some point and it is clear to see why.
