Product description

Domenico Scarlatti found himself in the awkward situation of being the son of one of Europe s most celebrated composers, Alessandro Scarlatti (1660 1725). Domenico, for all his efforts, never achieved the immense glory of his father in the field of opera, and for a long time his career was overshadowed. It was only after his appointment as harpsichord teacher to Maria Barbara of Braganza that he seemed to finally find his own inimitable style. At the height of his artistic maturity, Scarlatti had his sonatas copied into albums dedicated to Maria Barbara and seemed to borrow Ralph Kirkpatrick s wonderful expression to write as though reliving his life. The remarkable harpsichord-tiorbino on this album (Napoli, ca. 1710) is currently the only known example to have survived with its original disposition intact: one keyboard with the usual brass strings, and a second keyboard with gut strings.
