Regretting purchasing the paperback version. Shoddy front cover flap - at first read, the front cover starting to peel from the top. 3rd of the way in and the split is halfway down the front cover.... Not happy with quality...

A wonderful book, but impossible to read or use, thanks to mean, cost-cutting production
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 October 2018Verified Purchase
I'm afraid that this anniversary paperback edition of Nigella's lovely book is a disgrace to the publishing profession. Having worked for many years in the business, I can almost hear the editorial/production/sales meeting as the edition was in the planning stage. "What's the optimum price at which this book will sell?" says the Editor. "14.99" says the Sales Manager. "Right", says the Editorial Director". "I'll cost it", says the Production Manager. Working from that price, they work out how to produce the book for it. If the optimum price agreed at the meeting is too low, but isn't corrected at a subsequent meeting, quality suffers. Cheap paper stock is chosen, and as has happened here, is shaved down to the minimum dimensions that will accommodate the text. Almost no margin is left at the heads of the pages, and no margins at all in the gutter. "Gutter" is the term that describes the margins at the inside edges of the pages. If these margins are inadequate, the words at the ends of lines disappear into the gutter and cannot be comfortably read without bending the book back and breaking the spine - not something that anyone who loves books would dream of doing.
I wanted to keep this anniversary paperback edition at Amazon's great price of £10.99 because I love the brilliant cover design. So I tried. But after half an hour of trying to read the book my hands hurt from holding it, and my eyes hurt from peering into the gutter. So I've returned it, and have ordered the hardback. It should be fine: its quoted dimensions - 19.6 x 4 x 25.4 cm as against the paperback's 15.3 x 4 x 21.6 cm - tell me that there will be plenty of space surrounding the words on each page, and an ample gutter. And there is a good chance that it will lie flat so that I can use it to cook something if I want to. It costs £8 more, but it will be worth it.
Vintage have been in the book-making business for a very long time, as have Clays, who printed and bound the book. Both ought to have known better than to offer such a mean, stingy production job, useless as a book to read or to use, and an insult to its author and its readers.

Very difficult to read.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 January 2019Verified Purchase
This is a recent purchase which as yet I have not begun to read seriously, due to the quality of the text, which appears to vary throughout. The text of the index is so faint that it is completely unreadable. The rest of the book appears to have very variable print: some is perfectly clear but about a third is of a very poor standard. It is certainly nowhere near the standard of the average kindle book. Very disappointing. It’s going to be a very difficult read.

A kitchen staple

This book is absolutely brilliant. I have nearly all of Nigella's books simply because I'm a huge fan of hers, not only because I like the way she writes, but I find her recipes foolproof. This book in particular though is the one I go to the most - it has essentials such as making pastry, sauces, but also full recipes for meals as well. She keeps recipes and instructions simple and to the point, which I like.

A simply wonderful book to savour.......

Don't know why I didn't read How to Eat the first time round.....missed it somehow but have made up for this oversight
by purchasing the Anniversary Edition. It is a wonderful book from which to cook and through which to enjoy the
stories of a family kitchen. I've kept it by my bedside and read it as one would a novel....marking recipes I want to
try as I go along. I can't say that I've got on particularly well with Nigella's book in the past, but this is a joy and a
classic.

A foodies cookbook!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 May 2012Verified Purchase
As an avid home cook borderline frustrated chef I love a good cook book! I don't just buy them and have a great line up just for show in the kitchen either, (You know, like people who have a lovely guitar on a display stand but can't strum a single chord!), I like cookery books I can actually use. This is definitely one of those books.
Nigella writes here as though she is actually with you (nice thought!) it is her talking you through the preperation and cooking techniques in good old plain english. There are no lovely foodie pics in here but passionate descriptions as only Nigella can let roll off her tongue. She's not afraid of food either, plenty of butter, cream, cheeese to go around and she likes a beer according to some of the recipies, good stuff indeed. Put it this way. . .out of 474 pages there is a section called Low Fat of some 37-ish pages! My kind of food :)
There's something for everyone, covering all the seasons and mealtimes- breakfast, lunch and dinner (tea oop north!) and supper, snacks and anything inbetween as there always is in our house! We eat meals between meals without ruining our appetites!
I love the wording of the meals such as "Camp, but only slightly, dinner for 6" or "Summer dinner with Wintery possibilites for 8", brilliant! I know a few lads for the camp option. Oof!
Some dishes I like personally that have gone down well would be. . .
Lemon ice cream (no fancy pants ice cream maker required)
Proust's Madeleines (you'll need Madeleine tins of course)
Sunday night chicken noodle
She covers all the basics too, such as making stock and salad dressings, flavouring oil, making mayonnaise, custard and of course there is a basic white loaf recipie at the beginning. Near the back there are recipies for children and babies so she's covered more or less most peoples wants.
So, this is a great book, not a recipie book but more of a manual guiding you with little hints and tips along the way. Not just just giving you a list of ingredients and letting you find your own way around.
Here you have Nigella showing you the ropes! Ooer!
