Surprisingly engaging and engrossing

I'm not generally a true-crime fan and I have read very little of the genre so I don't have a lot of experience to draw on. I picked this up after the arrest of the Golden State killer and because of its positive reviews. I wasn't disappointed. Despite being difficult read, given Michelle McNamara doesn't try to shield her reader from the inherent horror, I found this book surprisingly engaging and engrossing. I got a real sense not just of the crimes being examined but of the writer herself and the others she came into contact with and the impact this case had on their lives. I am glad, however, that I read it after the arrest had been made, this really is the stuff of nightmares.
