Imagination and creativity are at the root of every uniquely human achievement, and those achievements have brought us to this present moment.
We are now the largest population in human history: seven and half billion people, rising to nine billion by 2050. Our technologies are evolving exponentially, but spiritually and emotionally, we're not keeping pace. Our appetites are straining the Earth's capacity to sustain us, and our attempts to force it to do so are fuelling a holocaust of other species. Communities across the globe are still locked in ancient cultural conflicts, and while the majority of people are materially more comfortable than ever before, there are global epidemics of depression and anxiety.
To meet these existential challenges, we have to harness our creativity to a more compassionate and sustainable vision of the world we want to live in and the lives we hope to lead. To do that, we have to create new systems of education for the future and for our children that are based on organic principles of diversity, creativity and collaboration.

In the first half, Sir Ken demonstrates his deep and wide knowledge of the education system. He shows an ability to focus on individual areas and also appreciate the broader concepts and repercussions of policies.
His thoughts are obviously the result of long, deep study and a lifetime of experience. His words are therefore insightful, and inspiring.
Unfortunately, that deep thoughtfulness is abandoned in the second half (again, this may be Kate's contribution), and a new direction is taken. A direction of ideological capture, unquestioning of current cultural (dare I say - religious) narratives.
No over-arching view is taken of Climate Change, Extinction Rebellion, School Strike For Climate, BLM etc. They are all taken as read, with no criticism or even examination.
Sir Ken had such knowledge and wisdom around education, set out beautifully in the first half. In the second half of the book, the areas covered show no such attention to deep consideration, merely ideological acceptance.
It was a disappointment how the book went off the rails, but I've seen this so many times lately - otherwise highly intelligent, educated and well-meaning people becoming infected with bad ideas. It's a mystery to me why it happens.

In Ken Robinson's introduction, he mentioned the "book" was meant to be a letter or manifesto. The final product is difficult to discern - Is it a letter from Ken? Is it a short book about his daughter Kate's new foundation? Is it an innocent-enough marketing ploy on Kate's part to advertise her foundation? It is unclear.
The second to last chapter was the best; it included practical ideas for how all stakeholders can contribute to education and influence a much-needed transformation. I wish the rest of the book had been edited down into highlights and something more accessible for the general public. At $17, the price is too high and leaves many out; the problem is in the editing and framing. In my opinion it should have been free and to the point: an open-ended letter from Ken to the public.
