Pretty good cook book. We purchased it for half the price of the initial release price, which is about right for a hard back book of this type - not really worth the full price. We've tried a number of the recipes. Most very good and interesting. Uses ingredients we've all heard of, so that's good. Doesn't get too fancy either, which is also good - who wants to take hours looking for ingredients and preparing a meal? Not for dinner parties maybe, but as good a buy as any for general meal ideas. Talking of the preparation time, we were initially drawn by the "30 minute meals" title, although having watched the related TV series, we had already deduced that the title was possibly a little optimistic to say the least for us general public (in fact, tongue in cheek, one wonders how it doesn't fall foul of the trade descriptions act?, ah that's it.... it says "Jamie's...., so maybe he can) Granted, some recipes are quicker/easier than others, but should be called "meals under an hour?". So one point lost for optimistic title, but if you bear this in mind, it a decent cook book to add to your collection.
I accept that many of these recipies require you to be totally organised before you begin to prep. Some of them may even require some prepping before you prep...if that makes sense? And to manage them in thirty minutes requires a high level of organisational skill. Nevertheless, the recipies are brilliant! And far more straight forward than in most other cook books. I have never taken more than forty five minutes to complete any of them, and that that's fine by me. Best of all, they are delicious. This is the best quick meal book I have come across with the possible exception of Nigel Slater's The Thirty Minute Cook. Is that where Jamie got his idea from? Who cares. Get them both. You'll never need another.

The Cleansing (DCI Tom Caton Manchester Crime Novels)
My wife has a selection of cooks books, and I tend to buy from different celebrity chefs. However, this is my second purchase from Jamie Oliver. My wife and I are always so busy - but we do like to eat well. Having said that, as time is a premium, we have to have recipes which are quick, easy, and appealing!
This book is great. Its crammed full of easy to do (maybe not everyone will agree with this statement) recipes which are all under 30 mins. Great when you want something tasty in a short space of time. There are beautiful pictures showing you the preparation and once the dish has completed. My wife has found the recipes themselves easy to follow albeit sometimes this can be more than 30 minutes. Having said all that - once you have done them several times, you can quickly up the pace. The book offers a varied selection across 50 recipes and there is something in there for everyone. At £13, a great buy.
When I left home I didn't even know how long to boil an egg for. I've always had an interest in cooking but never given the opportunity.
I was recommended this book by a work mate and I'm so pleased with it. It has opened a whole world of cooking to me. I threw myself whole heatedly at it and went and bought the cooking equipment and utensils as advised at the start of the book.
How people complain about this book is beyond me? As long as you following the instructions to the letter rather than doing what you think should be done, I don't see how you can go wrong! Trust in Jamie (That's why he is a pro chef and you're shopping on Amazon)
The longest time it has taken me to prepare a meal is 54 mins and that included running to the shop to get gas as it had run out! That was as total beginner.
Most of the dishes have deserts included (which I love!), if you don't wish to have a desert just ignore that part and move on. Again, I don't know why this causes such an issue with some people.
Some of the dishes can be expensive for the first time, but once you have most of the ingredients you can use them over and over again. I now have an impressive range of spices, oils and condiments that crop up through out all of Jamie's books.
Just do EXACTLY what the book says and you will be not be disappointed!
People are often very sniffy about Jamie Oliver, quite wrongly I think. He has no pretensions to haute cuisine. He just produces good, accessible and affordable food. I have several of his books and have yet to find a duff recipe.
People may be put off this book because it is promoting complete menus for meals. You can also use it to cook individual recipes. However, it is invaluable as a way of teaching you how to be organised in your kitchen.
The recipes are good and frequently look much more complicated than they are. It is an excellent source of quick and gorgeous puddings. The red fruit granita is especially wonderful and completely foolproof. There are also lots of innovative salad recipes that can be adapted all sorts of different ways.
If you like good, satisfying and delicious food that is quick and easy to prepare, this is the book for you.
I like watching Jamie on the telly, hes very passionate about cooking and his food looks amazing, but this book puts me off from cookign. The problem I find is when you go into the recipies the sheer amount of text takes around 25 out of 30min this book claims it takes to prepare the meal. The way its written makes me dont want to open it. I thought the meals would be nice and fast to prepare and soooo easy. Whilst that might be true, the wording and the amount of information in the recipies put me off from trying more than a handfull of recipies.
Wow! What a book. Arrived very quickly and in perfect condition. This is a fantastic cooking book for any household and offers up some excellent recipe ideas with a unique and superb layout. Once you get used the way Jamie Oliver (I know, I don't actually like him that much either!) explains the recipes and cooking process you will be away!! There are a great many recipes concealed within this collection, ranging from curry dishes to things like the meatball sandwich. There are a great many review of this item already on Amazon which I had a look through to decide if I wanted to purchase this item and came to the conclusion that I did and I am very pleased with the choice I made. I am not surprised this has got such excellent reviews. A good purchase for anyone eager to learn how to cook or anyone simply wanting some refreshing recipe ideas!
I have always cooked from scratch and mainly buy books for new inspiration. I didnt really buy this because i wanted everything ready in 30 mins, i brought it because I thought it might get us trying some new things and it did!! I have used it alot and we have enjoyed everything we have made.it would be a good book for anyone who is not great in the kitchen or is just starting out because each receipe is a whole meal and its written in a way that takes the guess work out of timing everything to be ready at the same time (which is what most new cooks complain about!)The receipes are easy enough for a beginner but tasty enough to satisfy the more advanced. i can think of at least 3 people straight away that this would make a good present for.
My only negative is: Not very many of the receipes are suited to a young family (my children are 4 and 1) I have been able to adapt some to be more suitable but I would have been thrilled if it had more for them.
Overall: I Love It. for me its a great everyday food book
A really good cook book for people who want to eat great, fresh, home cooked food without slaving for hours in the kitchen. I've tried 4 or 5 of the receipes so far and all have been straight-forward to prepare and really tasty. I know some people have quibbled about whether you can actually cook the meals in 30 mins but I think that with a little practice and good organisation it's more than doable.
I can especially recommend the Vegetarian Rogan Josh (as a committed carnivore it's one of the only vegetairian meals I've eaten where I didn't think "It'd be nicer with a little bit of chicken next time") and the Feta and Spinach Pie which was a big hit with everyone who tried it.
I think this is one of the most useful cook books I've ever owned and would recommend it to anyone who likes quick, tasty food. 5 stars from me!!!
Wonderful!! Can't think why some have had such big problems with the timings. Yes, of course, the first time we do the recipe, extra time must be allowed to read it but I find it a great help to get all the ingredients together in little piles for each part of the recipe and I make up dressings, etc first so that they're ready to be added immediately they're required. I'm sure there are some recipes that will take a tad longer than 30 minutes even for experienced cooks and even after a couple of times of making them i.e. the Thai green curry chicken looks a bit fussy but I plan to make this one when I have that extra time to allow for that. I love his blend of flavours and the mint sugar is inspirational. And to think I never liked mint!! I've enjoyed every recipe so far. I can't recommend it enough.
