Product description

Review

America's Test Kitchen has come to the rescue for parents -- with a fun new activity book for young chefs. -- KATU

This book was designed for lockdown -- because the ATK Kids staff made it in lockdown. For ages 8 to 12, this workbook includes very simple recipes and science experiments to spark kids' curiosity about how cooking works. With plenty of puzzles, such as crosswords and scrambles, this is another resource that doesn't require kids to actually be in the kitchen, but plenty of blank pages for drawing and note taking means kids can take ownership over their culinary education. -- The Washington Post

Book Description

The best activity book to have fun with food!

5.0 out of 5 stars More than cooking - experiments and games
Reviewed in the United States on 16 November 2020
My local paper always has great recipes from America’s Test Kitchen, so I was intrigued to see this book for kids. "Kitchen Explorers" is aptly named - it's more than just cooking. There are experiments and understanding ingredients too.

The book is laid out in a manner that encourages kids to be more involved than just following a recipe. The recipes have space for kids to note what they liked/didn’t like, or what they might change next time around. There are factual sections that talks about the ingredient in question. For example, the Blueberry Muffins - it talks about blueberries, their seeds, and whether they are actually berries.

The experiments have space for kids to make a prediction, make notes, and there's an interpretation of the results. I like the scientific approach. It stimulates critical thinking.

The games and puzzles include crossword puzzles, word fill ins, and multiple choice questions. It's a way to reinforce what they've learned.

This is aimed at kids 8-12 years old, and I agree that is an appropriate age group. This gets kids interested in cooking, but it also sparks their thinking skills.
