Product description

Size Name:18 Zone Conversion Kit

The Konnected Alarm Panel replaces your old security system panel, connecting your existing wired alarm system to a compatible home automation platform: SmartThings (no hub required), Home Assistant, Hubitat and OpenHAB. This lets you monitor your home from anywherewithout monthly fees! Use your wired door, window, and motion sensors for home automation, like turning on lights when motion is detected or announcing when a door is open with a voice assistant. Replace your outdated wired alarm system and save a ton of money by doing it yourself. Konnected is easy to install in place of your old wired alarm system. Our online installation guide will take you from start to finish in about an hour.

Your Home is Pre-wired to be a Smart Home

Millions of homes are built pre-wired for alarm systems, but most of these systems are decades outdated. Wired alarm systems have traditionally been closed systems that you had to pay a monitoring company up to $100 per month to use! Many homeowners with pre-installed alarm systems rarely or never use them because they are inconvenient, ineffective or too expensive to maintain.

Konnected changes all that with our open source software, simple hardware, and integrations with leading home automation platforms SmartThingsHome Assistant, Hubitat and OpenHAB

Infinitely Expandable

Most traditional alarm systems are limited to 8 or 12 zones, forcing you to group multiple sensors together into a zone. Konnected is infinitely expandable, allowing you to have granular visibility into each and every door, window, motion, and other sensor in your home. Each 6-zone module operates independently, and the system can be expanded easily at any time by simply adding more modules.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little quirky but it works
Reviewed in the United States on 29 April 2021
I'm using these to redo an alarm system, along with Home Assistant on a RPI 4 as the server. It's a little quirky but (so far) it works.

Pluses:

* Nice voltage range for input power. The AUX power pins are the same as the power input jack, so power can just be hardwired to those.

* Wifi connects solidly as long as you are cognizant of the limited range. If you get drop-outs, its probably a ranging issue. For me the RPI4 is right next to the konnected devices and the connection is solid when I use a little wifi dongle on the RPI as the AP.

* Fairly robust input and drive circuitry.

* Inputs work nicely for retrofitting a hardwired alarm system. I had no issues. The pizeo-electric buzzers included are great for testing, I also use them for my beeping warning during alarm sequencing (prior to the real alarm going off).

Minuses:

* Configuring the Wifi network with the Konnected app is slapdash. I had to enter the ssid and password 8 times. The app also gets extremely confused if the IP address changes (while configuring the dhcp server to assign static IPs, for example). The app also does not reliably scan the network for devices. It would be nice if the units could report their ENTIRE mac address as their initial SSID, it would have saved me a lot of time.

* The 'factory reset' sequence, which is to hold the right button down for 10 seconds, really should also reset the Wifi configuration too. It doesn't, and the result is a lot of wasted time on the learning curve. e.g. I had to turn off one router I was using for tested so the device would go back to using their configuration ssid.

* The DC power connector just wastes space. Can you imagine the cable mess that would create? Fortunately power can be wired via the AUX terminals.

* Unit ships with stick'm stand-offs which are useless and honestly dangerous, you don't want these units breaking loose with miscellaneous voltages all over the place. It would be nice if the units shipped with nylon spacers and either wood screws and bolts and nuts. Not critical though. But don't use the stand-offs that come with it. Roughly 7mm outside diameter, 4mm hole (M4 screw I think but don't quote me).

Watch out for:

* The alarm outputs shouldn't be used to drive any real load. There is precious little documentation on drive, pull-down capabilities, and voltage tolerances. Just don't risk it. An output can run a little piezoelectric buzzer ok but don't try to run a siren or a bell. Instead, have the output drive a 5V relay to run your 12V siren or bell. i.e. VCC=5V, output (3.3V works to turn on the relay), and then on the output side of the relay you have your 12V common and NO to the siren or alarm. Remember to properly fuse any 12V appliance. Many of the konnect boards have a 5V pin with sufficient drive to power the relay.

* Do NOT try to drive a 3.3V relay with a 3.3V konnect output. It won't work reliably.

* These konnect devices appear to absolutely require internet access to sync with a NTP server (looks like they check google and then do a generic ntp lookup, so they need domain service). If there is no working domain service and/or the konnect devices cannot synchronize time, they appear to not work properly with e.g. Home Assistant. You can articulate outputs, but inputs won't report. This is a bug for certain... to be robust, these devices need to work without internet connectivity. Those drove me nuts so I dropped off another star.

* Be warned that if using an RPI 4, the on-board Wifi has severe limitations (depending on firmware rev) on the number of clients that can connect. It may also have device-sleep issues. Many USB wifi dongles used w/ the RPI 4 also have device-sleep issues that can cause severe connectivity problems in setups like this. I recommend this dongle to work around such issues (it works in AP mode on the RPI 4 pretty well from my testing):

Normal wifi routers and such don't seem to have any such issues, but also remember that the wifi antenna on these konnected devices is tiny tiny tiny and will not have much range.

* For DIY projects use a fuse-block for anything you actually power with 12VDC and get an assortment of car-style fuses and probably also a bag of 1A fuses. Here is an example of a fuse block. You will mostly be using 1A and 2A fuses. For example, if you have a 12VDC supply and want to power a RPI 4, you would bus the 12VDC through a 2A fuse and then to a 12-to-5 DC-to-DC converter to power the RPI 4. If powering an alarm bell or siren, check the wattage required and typically use a 1A or 2A fuse. Fusing is extremely important for robustness and to reduce the chance of melted wires or a fire when things go wrong.

* In my wired alarm retrofit I decided to use a LiFePO4 10Ah battery, but finding a small 2A power supply / trickle-charger for the system (that will also power the devices) has proven to be challenging. Generally speaking you want to supply 13.4VDC current-limited to (typically) 2A to directly connect a LiFePO4 battery without over-charging it. But common power supplies like the Mean Well's have an over-current hicup mode (which doesn't really work for this application) instead of current limiting. So if the battery becomes deeply discharged, they won't be able to bring it back up. Be aware of this issue for D.I.Y. alarm system projects.
