It's impossible to imagine Sergio Leone's revolutionary spaghetti westerns without Ennio Morricone's equally revolutionary music: both are truly iconic. However theirs was a uniquely inspired collaboration and Morricone's soundtrack work for other directors was less distinctive, as this CD shows. The absence of anything from his best-known work 'The Good, The Bad & The Ugly' is a serious omission and some of the vocal numbers ('A Gringo Like Me', 'Lonesome Billy', 'Angel Face') are downright cheesy, so this can only warrant 4 stars, but given the huge numbers of misleadingly-packaged re-recordings out there, this is still probably the best-value introduction to Morricone's unique originals.
I got this CD expecting to play if a few times, and then put it on the shelf. But honestly, it's been in my car player pretty much constantly for the last month and a half. Some great song from a lot of films on here. Some I recognized, and a few I'd never even heard of before. Surprisingly, some of my personal favorites are the songs with accompanying singers. "A Gringo Like Me" and "Lonesome Billy" are two of the best. Noticeably missing are any songs from "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". That seems a bit odd. But otherwise a great compilation of amazing western film music.
