About Laurence Moroney
Hi -- I'm Laurence Moroney, and I lead AI Advocacy at Google.
My newest book is called 'AI and Machine Learning for Coders', and it's aimed at people who know a little Python code, with a view to showing you that AI and ML aren't as hard as you might have been led to believe! No PhD, no Math, just code, and you can start building models for Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing and more! I've written lots of programming books, and this one is my favorite!
I'm also a produced screenwriter, and author of Science Fiction novels -- which qualified me as a member of the Science Fiction Writers of America.
My Locust series of YA books 'The Fourth World', 'The Million Year Journey' and 'The Legend of the Locust', are available for FREE on Kindle. Please check them out! I like to described them as a cross between 'Harry Potter' and 'The X-Files'. Please check them out!
In addition to these, I'm also the author of the acclaimed young adult novel 'Space Cadets'. After the publisher closed down the book is now out-of-print, but I'm searching for a new publisher to help bring this story back to the world. It's a really fun story, and the beginning of an epic arc that I have mapped out. Hope you all get to see it soon!
I've also been a comic book author writing titles for 'Stargate Universe' and 'Equilibrium'

Books By Laurence Moroney
If you're looking to make a career move from programmer to AI specialist, this is the ideal place to start. Based on Laurence Moroney's extremely successful AI courses, this introductory book provides a hands-on, code-first approach to help you build confidence while you learn key topics.
You'll understand how to implement the most common scenarios in machine learning, such as computer vision, natural language processing (NLP), and sequence modeling for web, mobile, cloud, and embedded runtimes. Most books on machine learning begin with a daunting amount of advanced math. This guide is built on practical lessons that let you work directly with the code.
You'll learn:
- How to build models with TensorFlow using skills that employers desire
- The basics of machine learning by working with code samples
- How to implement computer vision, including feature detection in images
- How to use NLP to tokenize and sequence words and sentences
- Methods for embedding models in Android and iOS
- How to serve models over the web and in the cloud with TensorFlow Serving
AI is nothing without somewhere to run it. Now that mobile devices have become the primary computing device for most people, it's essential that mobile developers add AI to their toolbox. This insightful book is your guide to creating and running models on popular mobile platforms such as iOS and Android.
Laurence Moroney, lead AI advocate at Google, offers an introduction to machine learning techniques and tools, then walks you through writing Android and iOS apps powered by common ML models like computer vision and text recognition, using tools such as ML Kit, TensorFlow Lite, and Core ML. If you're a mobile developer, this book will help you take advantage of the ML revolution today.
- Explore the options for implementing ML and AI on mobile devices
- Create ML models for iOS and Android
- Write ML Kit and TensorFlow Lite apps for iOS and Android, and Core ML/Create ML apps for iOS
- Choose the best techniques and tools for your use case, such as cloud-based versus on-device inference and high-level versus low-level APIs
- Learn privacy and ethics best practices for ML on devices
Plan how to build a better app, grow it into a business, and earn money from your hard work using Firebase. In this book, Laurence Moroney, Staff Developer Advocate at Google, takes you through each of the 15 Firebase technologies, showing you how to use them with concrete examples. You’ll see how to build cross-platform apps with the three pillars of the Firebase platform: technologies to help you develop apps with a real-time database, remote configuration, cloud messaging, and more; grow your apps with user sharing, search integration, analytics, and more; and earn from your apps with in-app advertising.
After reading The Definitive Guide to Firebase, you'll come away empowered to make the most of this technology that helps you build better cross-platform mobile apps using either native Android or JavaScript-based web apps and effectively deploy them in a cloud environment.
What You'll Learn
- Use the real-time database for a codeless middleware that gives online and offline data for syncing across your users’ devices
- Master Firebase Cloud Messaging, a technology that delivers to connected devices in less than 500ms
- Grow your app organically with technologies such App Indexing, App Invites, and Dynamic Links
- Understand problems when they arise with crash reporting
- Fix user problems without direct access to users’ devices
- Tie it all together with analytics that give you great intelligence about how users interact with your app
Who This Book Is For
Experienced Android, mobile app developers new to Firebase. This book is also for experienced web developers looking to build and deploy web apps for smartphones and tablets, too, who may be new or less experienced with mobile programming.
Buried deep below the Nevada desert, in a place often called Area 51, is a very special and ancient school where the best and brightest children come to learn the technology that will bring mankind to its next step of evolution -- a place amongst the stars. 'The Fourth World' follows four children through their entry into this school: 'Fintan Reilly' is a young, often bullied Irish boy who has a big destiny; Zach Adams, from Fresno, is his diametric opposite, and instant best friend; Ayako Katsuragi is a brilliant Japanese girl, a military brat who is as capable as she is smart and Nizhoni Benally is a Navajo from New Mexico, who is as tough as she is beautiful, and who somehow shares a secret past with Fintan. The book follows their first year in their new school, with an Alien as headmaster, and where they learn everything from Cosmic History through to how to fly a flying saucer, and comes to a shocking conclusion in a field trip to Mars where ancient secrets are uncovered.
Having discovered a second city, hidden under Japan, events have begun to spin out of control. With the Navajo ready for war, the government ready to intervene, and the warning from Ayako, that his actions could lead to the end of the world, Fintan has a difficult road before him.
With his friends at his side he must stand up and take control of the situation. There are always options - he just needs to find them. And maybe, just maybe, Nizhoni is still alive and trapped in that city.
Ending the saga that began with 'The Fourth World' and continued with 'The Million Year Journey', The Legend of the Locust is science fiction on an epic scale. From the opening pages to the dramatic conclusion, it's a story you won't forget!
The Sequel to "The Fourth World" leads our heroes: Fintan, Zack and Ayako to the other side of the universe in the adventure of a lifetime!
The events on Mars have shaken Fintan to his very core. He hears Nizhoni's voice in his head, and thinks he is breaking down. But when fate brings him back together with the Navajo, he realizes that all may bot be as it appears, and he returns to Area 51.
Having lived through a war with the mysterious Hunters, rejoining school life proves to be difficult, but he has his friends Zack and Ayako at his side. And when a new crop of children comes into the school to join Red Squadron, he makes new friends, including the enigmatic Rachel.
When humanity's first Starship, the Destiny, while on its maiden voyage to Saturn, crashes on an unknown world on the far side of the Galaxy, the voices come back to haunt Fintan, and lead him to the discovery of a lifetime...
