Pales in comparison to "The Laws Field Guide to the Sierra Nevada"Reviewed in the United States on 25 November 2014
After using Laws's excellent Sierra Nevada field guide, I was super excited about getting this. The illustrations are of course beautiful, but it's not nearly as comprehensive as I was hoping it would be. First, it's mostly birds, with a few plants, insects, mammals, and reptiles as a seeming afterthought and no lichens or fungi; second, it isn't organized in the usual way that identification guides are (e.g. by grouping plants by leaf structure); third, it doesn't contain little notes about features to notice to aid in identification as his Sierra Nevada field guide does, although some of the illustrations are copied from this guide, leaving little arrows with nothing at the ends; finally, it has no scientific names or phylogenetic information about how the different species are related to one another. Perhaps these things are a lot to ask from a pocket guide set, but I guess my standards are high after spending so much time with his Sierra Nevada book.
