Count Moïse de Camondo lived a few doors away from Edmund de Waal's forebears, the Ephrussi, first encountered in his best-selling memoir The Hare with Amber Eyes. Like the Ephrussi, the Camondos were part of Belle Epoque high society. They were also targets of anti-Semitism.

Camondo created a spectacular house and filled it with the greatest private collection of French 18th-century art for his son to inherit. But when Nissim was killed in the First World War, it became a memorial and, on the count's death, was bequeathed to France.

The Musée Nissim de Camondo has remained unchanged since 1936. Edmund de Waal explores the lavish rooms and detailed archives and uncovers new layers to the family story. In a haunting series of letters addressed to the count, he tells us what happened next.

I was able to follow it with my musée guide next to me. However, for those who don’t know the musée, this might prove to be too esoteric. I adored it, however.

If like me you didn’t want The Hare with the Amber Eyes to be finished you have a chance to revisit De Waal’s interesting family history. Written with great sensitivity, this book again brings the historical period to life. Being immersed in the building feels just like being in the Paris of the 19th and 20th century with him.

Edmund de Waal is a descent of the well-known Ephrussi family, and this book recalls the memoriy of Count Nissim de Camondo, an other relative and an important art collector of the belle époque. The book is beautifully made and adequate for this person and his time - and his house is still preserved as "La musée Nissim de Camondo" in 63, rue Monceau in Paris.

Back to the same milieu as the Hare With The Amber Eyes but none the worse for that. What an intelligent civilised group of people those mainly Jewish Parisians were. No wonder Mr De Waal is drawn to them, apart from familial reasons. I would have been proud to have known them too.
