This is a kit that should suit most people who are OK with assembling lots of pieces, as in a jigsaw or other puzzle. They do include a good 1-page illustrated assembly sheet, and all the pieces are numbered - the inner cylinder has orientation marks as well as numbering to match the petal numbers. You need to look closely!
Rolling up the inner cylinder was the trickiest bit for me - it needs to be held in a tube shape whilst the dozen-or-so tongues are engaged on the _inside_ of this cylinder. Do not forget the 'spider' for the light fitting! This has a hole that fitted our up-lighter fitting perfectly, but would be too big for a standard BC or ES hanging lamp fitting.
Just cut an old plastic lid to fit under the spider provided, and cut a smaller hole in it for your fitting. Done!
The cylinder was a bit fiddly for my large, elderly and arthritic hands, took a couple of attempts before all was right. Using rubber bands to hold it circular helped!
Younger bones would help me more . . .
Then all the petals are folded into shape along the pre-scored lines, no problem - and inserted one at a time into their rows on the cylinder, the petals numbered '1' go in the row numbered '1' and so on.
Make sure that your petal rows are 'staggered' so that each petal is above the gap between the petals in the row below.
The petals get bigger in size from 1 to 5, but the last row is smaller, it's marked number 4 and you use the extra 'size 4' petals to make the shape. Whole single size lamp shade took an hour or so to do (with breaks) and what a result! Looks fantastic whether lit up or not.
The family loved it, and everyone has one by now - but youngest daughter wanted a bigger one, if that was possible, please Dad?
Double Size version
So my wife and I did a double size one using two kits. That's it in our photo!
The cylinder is made double diameter using two cylinder sheets together, making sure they are both the same way up, etc. We added some clear tape to the 'seams' to help keep things together during assembly
The petals will no longer fit perfectly on the larger cylinder and there are twice as many now, so it is a bit more effort to assemble than the single size standard lamp shade - but it was all done by teatime, and it looks so very good! An imposing addition to our dining area.
You'll have to make a new 'spider' for your bulb fitting of course - we just bent one up out of 2mm galvanised steel fence wire. Not pretty, but it's out of sight. A big version of the provided spider could be cut out of 'plasticard' or similar suitable sheet material.
Well worth the effort even if you do not like puzzles.
Recommended strongly if you like the looks and don't mind fiddling with things a bit.
It looks even better in real life than in the pictures.
