We are using The Lost Words, and The Lost Spells in our daily homeschool Poetry Tea session followed by art lessons based on the stunning art work in these books - we also listen to the hauntingly gorgeous music that's been created singing these poems - you can find them on YouTube if you look up spell songs, Heartwood song is our favorite.
We have also purchased the book The Keepers of the wild words - it contains all of the nature words that were removed from the children's dictionary in a lovely little story.
Can't possibly give these books all the praise they deserve - what a mesmerizing protest movement to bring into every child's world.

Review
Sumptuously illustrated... the poems or nature summoning spells are indebted to Gerard Manley Hopkins with rich alliteration, word-play and compound adjectives [and] the illustrations make plants and creatures luminous against backgrounds of gold leaf ― The Sunday Times
One of the most striking and poignant picture books of the season...this giant tome contains not only beautiful illustrations but a haunting series of poems that read like a summoning back of the wild...a book in which every page seems like an act of love ― Herald
Sumptuous...a book combining meticulous wordcraft with exquisite illustrations deftly restores language describing the natural world to the children's lexicon... The Lost Words is a beautiful book and an important one ― The Observer
A breathtaking book... Jackie Morris has created something that you could spend all day looking at... This is the kind of complexity that can enthral a child as much as an adult... Refreshingly accessible, slightly magical ― New Statesman
One of the publishing sensations of recent times is The Lost Words ― Daily Mail
My top book of the year... It is one of those children's books for ages up to 99 years. The lost words are those my generation and earlier ones used every day and which are fast disappearing, and Macfarlane's aim is to resurrect the everyday glories of our language. May he succeed ― Susan Hill
Gilded and glorious, Jackie Morris's paintings illustrate Robert Macfarlane's acrostic poems in The Lost Words, one of the years loveliest books for all ages over 10 ― The Sunday Times
Rapturously received celebration of nature ― The New Statesman
Macfarlane is a changemaker... he has made nature-writing populis6t and big-selling. Morris's paintings are beautiful - at once familiar and other. A contender for book of the year ― The Big Issue
Publisher's description. An illustrated spell-book in watercolour and gold leaf, from the rich creative minds of award-winning author Robert Macfarlane and acclaimed artist Jackie Morris. As nature vanishes from children's language and their imagination, The Lost Words stands against the loss of magic, celebrating the joy of wild childhood and wild places. ― Penguin

Without a doubt the most beautiful book I have ever bought - both the pictures and the poems are beautiful, evocative and inspiring. Stunning. I bought one for a young cousin, and and now bought for another friend, and kept one for myself, I love it so much.

Packaging * Book 5*. A beautiful book with glorious pictures

I have given this review a 1* rating in the hope customers will read it. I would advise ordering from Amazon unless you want a damaged book.
This stunning book is a must for all who care about our diminishing woods, birds, flowers and countryside. The pictures are exquisite and the text beautiful. Highly recommended. My 3 books came in the flimsiest of boxes with a tear in the side. 2/3 books were damaged and, although no difficulty in Amazon replacing them and assuring me that the packaging department would be told about the inadequate packaging, the replacements came in an identical box!

This is a magnificent book - I love the illustrations and the basic concept

This is a magnificent book - I love the illustrations and the basic concept. I hope it does make a contribution in alerting a wider readership of just how the official dictionaries are ever in danger of delimiting our understandings of a particular language - and even killing off words that might be used by young children.

A beautiful book!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 November 2017Verified Purchase
It's not often you open a package to find a book which takes your breath away. The book is much bigger than I had realised which means that the illustrations are even more spectacular than I had expected. The poems are beautifully written and I'm certain my children will love receiving this on Christmas Day. It looks and feels like a truly special book.

This book was an absolute treat from start to finish,Robert Macfarlane's poems are amazing and as for Jackie Morris's paintings well what can one say other than SPELLBINDING,it's one of those books once you pick up you just can't put down, some people dislike this book because of it's massive size but for me the size only adds to the value,it enables you to enjoy the amazing artwork on a much bigger scale,it's a book that will be loved for many years to come by all ages.
