2.0 out of 5 stars Avoid the EK variant
Reviewed in the United States on 28 December 2020
MSI makes a great Z490 board and it is a decent platform for an i9-10850K or similar build. It looks damn good and MSI has proven reliable on dozens of other systems I have assembled working as an OEM. Unfortunately, I did run into some major issues working with this MSI-EK variant.

1.) Building a PC, you generally want to bench test the system with core components in place before moving on to installing other components such as USB, LEDS or finalizing cable management. With this board, it was difficult as you would essentially need to have a working water loop ready to go in order to do a post test. This is a challenge if you get everything together and then run into an issue with the board or CPU. I was fortunate and everything worked well, but this is something to think about if you are building on this board for a customer. Installing and removing the waterlines, and then installing them again could take considerable time if you run into an issue.

2.) Unfortunately, the promise of "enhanced" tech support from EK on this board fell far short. I had one of their technicians look over the loop plan for parts before ordering and they looked it over twice, but they missed (2) fittings that were needed to close the loop. They also recommended certain parts that were incompatible with the loop hardware. After getting everything together, it took another week to source the missing fittings. Something to consider: if you order parts direct from EK to the USA, it may take weeks to arrive as they are in Slovenia (other side of the planet).

3.) Customer service at EK later proved to be abysmal. There was a leak in one of the EK 280 radiators that I tied to this board that EK refused to cover. They kept coming back with excuse after excuse, such as blaming other parts of the system, yet I even sent them a video of the radiator after pulling it from the loop. It failed the leak test via the kit that comes with this motherboard. What they should have done was asked me to ship it back so they could inspect and/or replace it with an identical unit, or at least offer store credit or something. At their discretion would have been fine. Instead, it was excuse after excuse why they would not RMA. Terrible business practice from the customer service side at EK. This is something to keep in mind when you source parts from foreign suppliers; they may not accept returns.

Summary:
All in all, a great board, though I would highly recommend avoiding the EK variant. Stick with the base MSI Z490 and build out your own custom loop if you go water cooled. EK parts are overpriced and their slim radiators simply do not perform as well as those from other manufacturers. Further, the poor customer service at EK substantially diminishes the overall value of the product and made me seriously regret purchasing this product to being with. I would have gladly paid another $100 for better customer service.

To all the big names:
For those that want to jump on the EK bandwagon and offer up products that tout partnerships with EK, keep in mind that there are many other companies out there that offer water cooling systems and they do them well. Also, AIO systems are getting better and better, and AOI setups are much simpler to install for the average system builder. Please DO NOT persuade customers into the “EK” wheelhouse. Instead, I would recommend keeping mainboards agnostic, capable of supporting the widest range of air- and water-cooling systems.

If you decide to sell a product in partnership with EK, be sure to provide your own customer service support numbers with instructions how to reach you rather than EK. If you are relying on EK to provide any degree of support, that a is serious marketing error and a great way to lose your long-term customers.
